I am so excited to see fresh figs available in Wholefood.  There are Brown Turkey, Sierra, and Mission.  Since I am not sure if I will have any ripe figs from my trees this year, I decided to get Sierra and Mission.  Photos will be followed.  Can't wait to try it later!!!

I too, discovered fresh figs at a little fruit stand down the road. They were shipped in from the west coast. The owner asked if I wanted them all! Two flats, twenty-seven each. I took one flat of Mission figs and noticed that they were not quite dead ripe. I am hoping that another day or two will get them there. Meanwhile, the furious search is on for mascarpone, walnuts, prosciutto, chevre, etc.  Maybe not the best way to get fresh figs, but better than nothing?

The ones I got from Trader Joes the other day are about gone. Today I cut some up and put them in with a salad with blue cheese, romaine and some other shredded goodies, dressed with a simple vinagrette, and they tasted great. The softness/sweet was a nice contrast to the more crunchy stuff.

If I come across more at the store that look good, I would buy them. :)

Sierra is pretty ripe, but Mission can be picked one or two days later.  If there is an option, I would prefer to pick some tree ripe figs. However, these are pretty good when there is nothing else to compare to. 

Guess who is the winner?  I prefer Sierra than Mission.

If I will buy figs in store next time, I will try to hand pick the most ripe one from each box... 

I am extremely happy to report that this is the first year I have not purchased figs from a store. I'm not trying to rub it in, just letting you know that given a few years, your trees will produce abundantly and you will be rewarded with excellent figs.

     That is my abiding hope. I ate one of the figs I purchased, and while it was good, it was evident the fig had been picked before its time. Nevertheless, it is the closest I will come this year to enjoying fresh figs and offers positive incentive for carrying on. Which reminds me: the next time you  have Sal's scions, I'd like to take another swing at it . . . .
