I needed a break from digging up worms so I shared a fig with the adopted robin since it already discovered one on the ground and loved it.

The last few weeks have been very difficult, for myself and my family.

After seeing this wonderful video, I can look at things very differently.

Thanks everyone,  Glad you enjoyed the video.  Its hard to believe it's been 6 days now.  I just looked at the first video and the robin definitely has grown and changed.  It's getting longer and more robin like instead of round.  Its feathers are definitely growing.  I brought it in one night but it did not like it.  Just before the sun goes down it changes character and you can see it looking to the trees for a good night perch.  It leaves and gives out the begging for food call until the sun sets.  I don't know if it expects me to get in the tree with it.  So far every morning I get out there at 5:30 am and it flies up to me and I give it breakfast blueberries and some worms.  Tonight it just dawned on me that maybe some fireworks startled and separated this robin from the parents.  So it might have been lost since July 5th.

I do agree with Martin and think this one tops the bat video. Maybe he will guard your (plural) figs from other birds.

I did the same for two baby robins that lost their mom when I was a kid. That video brought back fond memories.  Thank you.  I did make the mistake of feeding them to many strawberries and their bowel movements werent the best.  Good job balancing figs with worms.

If it is difficult for you to find worms, the hard-boiled egg chopped with the knife could be an excellent source of protein for that chick. I think it needs protein more than fruits. The feathers are made of protein as well as muscles are mostly protein. Ricotta soft cheese would be a source of protein and calcium for bones also.

Oh man that was cute. The ending with the little robin crashed out in a fat blissful nap just did me in.

OMG that was so cute I can't stand it!!  Baby birds are so amazing and yes they are demanding!!  Even as adults!  I have a 3 1/2 yo cockatiel and he still likes me to feed him by hand lol. 

Tom, as for food, if you are near a pet store (preferably pet bird store)  you can feed it Lafebers instant Nutri-Start baby bird formula.  Since the little one is already eating from your hand, you shouldn't have a problem feeding it to him.

I do make scrambled eggs for my bird - he LOVES it!! You can add peanut butter and other goodies too - like worms mmmmmmmmmm  - I even add baby food to them, chicken, beef, turkey.  Come to think of it, that might be a good idea instead of the baby bird food get a couple of jars of regular baby food - beef, chicken etc.

He cries for it every night for dinner - yes I admit it - I spoiled him :)  I hope you spoil your little enemy there.

What about "meal worms" from the pet shop?

Question:   ....will the Robin be able to make it without Human intervention?  I don't know...I'm just asking.

I was thinking of ordering some compost worms.  I am able to find enough stuff around the yard since I'm using the robin as an excuse to turn over the sod which is just all weeds anyway.  He stays outside all night so its not completely dependent on me.  Young adults still have those speckles on their breast and I have seen adult robins drive them off.  So in nature the parent finally say enough already, move out of the house.  At some point it will be sink or swim if it doesn't leave when it's time.

I've been feeding it from what I find in the sod when I turn it over plus the blueberries and gooseberries I have.  It's learning what it likes by itself.  I have seen that the black flat beatles irritate the bird with some chemical I think.  The robin loves June beatles and grubs and of course worms.  It also is also learning how to spot stuff in the dirt.  It often finds stuff before I see it.  Today it started eating earwigs.  It squishes the pincer part first and then eats it.  I wouldn't have thought it ate those.  I turned over a pile of sod I made from yesterday and found all kinds of insects it liked.

Thanks everyone.  I didn't think about pet food or egg yolks.  Those sound like good options.  I'm sure getting a good idea of what insect are in my soil.

Not the egg yolk only. You should feed the entire egg.

I looked up on Wikipedia and other sites and found they eat 40/60  invertebrates / fruit and berries.  They also eat meal worms, grasshoppers, earth worms, grubs, caterpillars etc. 

Don't forget a bird bath!
