free cuttings please

i was wondering if anyone is willing to send me some fig cuttings ill pay the s+h im new at this so any help would be greatly appreciated i do know that i like the brown turkey but im willing to try something similiar in taste etc please give me some advice

PS im not here to just take cuttings and run i need some time to grow my own trees and start collecting to be able to re gift thank you for your time

I have a small brown turkey (I think) which roots easy, grows like a weed, and puts out great tasting (to me) figs on first  year trees.  I got it from a neighbor before we moved from our last home who  said only that it was a "good fig from Cuba."  We have tenatively identified it as a brown turkey.  About half of my trees are unidentified and many of these produce my best figs.

Anyway...it's still a young tree.  Stick around the forum a while.  When I prune it next winter you can have a few cuttings if you're still interested.

I will try to post a pic.

I will send you some free cuttings, just pm me with your address. Marius

PM me at the end of June. I might have couple of cuttings.

I'm cutting down my Monrovia Brown Turkey after it ripens its breba crop.  It fell over and cracked at the base of the trunk two weeks ago.  I have about 30lbs of cuttings I can send, as big around as your thumb or larger.  Figs from it taste like crap, but they're great for rooting practice.

Jason,

If this forum ever decide to make T-shirt, I want your line on it.

Maybe they need salt!

You guys crack me up.  Just what a fella needs after a typically lousy Monday.

Well it looks like you'll get some free cuttings.  One of the best resources for this is the UC Davis site.  You can fill out their order form (scroll to the bottom of the linked page) for cuttings, choose the varieties you want (they usually send 3 of each).  You need to get your order in before Dec 1 for next years cuttings.  You will need to open a Fed Ex account for shipping using a credit card.  All the above is free except for the shipping costs.

My order for next year is already in, and it's 2 pages long!  Not all figs though!  Bigger on Grapevines here.

Do a little research to find out which cultivars do best in your area.  I usually look at where the cultivar came from, then choose.  This is mostly for grapevines in my case.  All figs do well here.  Mediterranean climate.  I feel sad for those who get serious winters, because they work hard to shuffle their figs inside or cover them in the snow.

The UC davis site is a good source, and that's excellent advice...  I'm planning to do that myself... but it would take almost a year to get those cuttings. I get the impression Tony wants them immediately.

order them and forget it. when it comes, it's like christmas :)

Pete is right!  It's like Christmas in March, and it smells like heaven!  Huge fan of UC Davis here.

If you can't wait at all, sometimes if you knock on a door and ask, you will be rewarded.  Fig trees in ground are huge, and most people don't mind letting you take a few cuttings.

Patience is a virtue.  It's hard for people to make time for helping you out if you don't have any time to spare. It also doesn't speak well of your character that you say you don't have time for anything, if you have no time for anything, no time to wait, how could you possibly have time to invest in this community and its members?

You say you have nothing to give....  I have some advice for you to think about.

You could easily contribute to the community just by interacting with the people that you're mooching cuttings off of here, which is plenty to give.  That's what most newbies with "nothing" to offer end up doing, some of which have become awesome friends here.  I'm sure some of them are probably reading this and can share their stories, as Gina did earlier.  If you spent a fraction of the time you've spent asking for cuttings in various threads just telling us who you are, where you're from, why you love figs ... anything ... That's one hell of a start, and it's how most normal people do when they walk in here.  After folks get to know you, like any other neighborhood on the planet, they open their doors and invite you in, friendships are borne, swapping begins, it's a pretty awesome thing.

You also have a lot of unknowns nearby, and I happen to know that NY has some of the most awesome fig trees in the USA, many were brought over from Europe by millions of  immigrants over the last couple of centuries, a lot of people spend their free time hunting down family heirloom trees in NY neighborhoods to find something awesome they can share with this community (Brown Turkey isn't totally common there, so I doubt most near you are Brown Turkey).  Brooklyn White, Brooklyn Dark are two that were discovered there which come to mind, but there are at least a dozen unknown varieties I've seen from NYC that look and supposedly taste better than that high-dollar fig at the store.  NY had one of the best fig nurseries with the most exclusive and sought-after varieties of all time - Belleclare - and those trees were sold by the thousands and are all over NY now.

I think I spent my first year or so here doing nothing but reading.  I looked through the pages of varieties and their pictures in the incredible Variety Database that Jon created.   I figured out what looked good to me, used the search feature to hunt down topics about those varieties.  I spent a while seeing what varieties folks here raved about tasting good, and I also checked the sticky thread at the top of the forum that's a couple pages of nothing but people discussing what grows well in different areas of the country.  I checked the Figs4Fun homepage, all of the links down the left-hand side (especially the growing tips) to see what other folks were doing - which also led me to some awesome places to score cuttings, FREE and pay-for stuff.  I asked questions about what I read to better understand and share.

At one point, I made notes while going back through the Variety database and reported to Jon any links that were broken and didn't work, just as another way to give back.  I didn't expect anything in return for it, I just did it because I had nothing else to give and I got a wealth of information in the process, and eventually made some awesome friends who shared awesome cuttings.

After a few weeks of posting, I added a short wants list in my signature, and as I posted more and more in the next couple of months with useful contributions, people began reaching out and offering me things in my wants list.  I returned the favor by sharing cuttings freely with nearly everyone from local trees that looked promising (we almost all have something unique nearby).

You could be doing any of these things and making a positive impact while making some friends.  Instead, you're hounding people to give you cuttings NOW NOW NOW.

Just sayin'

im not you i do have time and i never said i didn't have any time i said i want cuttings NOW yes NOW patience is not needed and im not here to make life long friends im here for some help and im here to help others pretty simple im sorry all your here for is to make fig friends that's not me i don't need to tell you why i like figs yadda yadda yadda i like figs and want to grow them what better place to get me started then a FIG forum not a FRIEND forum im not saying i wouldn't enjoy making a few friends but that's not what im here for i get right to the point no sense in reading blogs etc etc etc for a year or so like yourself again im not you and i think alot of people here would agree all my information where i live etc is in my profile no need to keep posting where i live and what i have to offer if you want something from NY i would be glad to help just ASK like im doing pretty simple and basic i don't understand why your so adamant in saying i shouldn't be asking yet etc etc etc get over it and move on stop being what i call a hater I'm a go getter i want something i ASK i don't beet around the bush so to speak so have yourself a nice day and enjoy your lifestyle on this forum thanks for your time

You are absolutely right. Don't need to be friends. Only thing is people prefer to share with friends. Some of us are wacky like that.

Now, I'll go look for my friends to share my cuttings with... I know... I'm just crazy like that... I must be a psycho.

Pete
