Freeze advisory

My little fig trees are tucked back in, in the garage... and my lone in ground tree is covered with blankets and a tarp... I live 20 miles west of the western edge of Chicago where it is forecasted to get down to 37F tonight...which means possible frost my way...the warm weather was fun while it lasted...next several days won't be much warmer in the evening...as they are predicting a freeze Thursday night/Friday morning...

Thanks for the row cover info! I may just go get a couple from the nursery so I do not have to wait, then order the rest online.

Thursday and Friday nights are still showing under 40F at night. My problem is that I have to do a lot of up potting because all the trees are leafed out and I know this should of been done sooner. However, if I up pot everything before it is time for them to go outside, I will not have enough room to bring them all back inside when they are in their new larger containers. So I am stuck.

Cannot wait to get that greenhouse this year!

We're getting hit by freezing temperatures tonight again. This time more trees had broken dormancy and whatever wasn't damaged before may be damaged tonight.
This map will automatically update on a daily basis.

I still do not belvieve it!
If so, let it be so.
I have had enough of this weather turmoil...

I'm not worried about figs, even if they get hit frost they will sprout back and still produce. Other fruit trees bloom all at once, so if these blooms were hit hard by frost/freeze you lose the entire crop. Figs bloom continuously for several months.

My pawpaw and pears are now in full bloom, Apricots and peaches have dime size fruit already.
Another reason why we should love figs.

Bass,

I recently got some very rare air layered fig trees. I had potted them up when the temps were warm and been inside the garage since the temps began to drop.

My question is since the soil is moist and being in the condition for the past two weeks do you think the roots will be harmed? As in rotting?

Anyone else with an answer please fill in.

I think they should be fine, but if the root mass is small and they are rare and valuable, I would have probably used a heating mat.

Thanks Bass,

Let's hope it isn't too late. My daughter said that most are growing anyway accept for two of them.

I will take those two inside the house when I get home tomorrow.
