I never had much luck with doing an air layer until I got those clamshell airlayer pots. I absalutly love them. But any how I had one going later on my hardy chicago than I should had. It produced some roots but then in came the cold weather without warning. I didn't give it much thought at the time. But when I was taking cuttings I noticed it. Now there where some roots that were brown and shrivled and dried. But also a few that was rust colorerd but seemed like they still had moister. So I took cuttings as I would, beings the air layer I had intended didn't produce a lot of roots due to the cold so I cut it down to cutting size and broughtt it in and potted it up. Now I am wondering if the roots on the cutting will be enought to start it out or if they will just die back.
