Fresh Figs at grocery store

Really surprised to find fresh figs at the grocery store yesterday.  I was in Shreveport La at Brookshires store.  This particular store is in a high end neighborhood and the store is stocked for the "Carriage Trade", fresh Brown Turkey, or a reasonable facsimile, $7.99 Lb.  As a point of reference, typical price during season at farmer's market is $5-8 lb.  Pretty good!, worked out to be about 45 cents per fig, well worth it since I have no fresh to pick.

Hi Danny,

Central Foods in Austin always have figs in season for that price. Sometimes they even import them from Chile. The Chile ones were a waist of my money.
The only ones, I really liked were the ripe Panache figs from CA. The other ones had no taste. They looked great but were not ripe nor tasty.

My uncle cut down his fig tree last year because he said they are now so easy to find at Trader Joe's or other grocery stores and his fig tree was always covered in bird crap and the birds took a bite out of every fig anyway.

Wegmans grocery stores in central NY state have been carrying fresh figs since early July.  They're from Western Fresh Marketing.  They've been pretty good... not as good as the ones we pick of course, but not at all bad.  Mission, Kadota, and Brown Turkey.

I've been chatting with some locals on Facebook about figs.  Someone looking for fresh figs at the grocery store.  Surprising they are still available at Randalls.

Man!!!!!!!!!!!! I would be overwhelmed with happy thoughts if I seen fresh Brown Turkey for sale at my grocery store. Awesome find.

One must consider that out here in the Hinterland there is a great shortage of Randalls, Central Markets, Whole Foods, and other nice stores that would carry figs.  We make do but sometimes it is a real pain.  OBTW, there are other redeeming qualities that make it worth enduring the tribulations.

You mean to tell me that your grocery store didn't have a full stock of Brown Turkey, Black Mission and Stella figs all pretty and packaged next to the strawberries?

For the first time in 18 years since I moved in my neighborhood, last month Kroger (my local grocery store) has for sale big purple figs (no specific name of what kid). The 6 fig pack just said purple fig on it's label. Nerveless, I still went wacky-tobaccy and bought it. They were about 2in figs with a large eye and a light pink interior. Their taste is way bland compared  to my Celeste figs, but still a little magical.
