This is the first night of frost of the season in my area. It's going down to 31 tonite 33 tuesday and wednesday. I covered everything up to help extend the growing season a little longer. Hope the figs make it through the next few nights. I got 5 trees in ground that I'm protecting and the ones in pots have sent roots into the ground so I decided to leave them there instead of ripping them out yet. Was thinking of pounding a stake in the ground, wrap a chain on it, connect it to my Jeep and pull the whole county south but somehow I don't think that will happen. I think there's a law against it ;)

If you do that the chain might snap, you might want to use two chains.

I took my Jasmines and several other rare potted plants in the garage. I need to spray them with insect soap before I take them in the house.

It might be that time of the year but I'm not ready for cold weather. Actually I'm never ready for cold weather. I'll have to break out the longjohns soon. yuk!

Brought all by outdoor its inside tonight. We had some really nice weather the last few days and tonight was rain/sleet. 

All my tropicals came in last week now the basement is full, I brought my figs in the last couple days as they haven't finished hardening off some of their greenwood on a few so when I started with a few I figured I would just bring everything in and let them drop their leaves in the attached garage (there are a couple windows).

Consider yourself lucky is cooler.  Still 90's here.  Going on 6 months of 90+ weather.  Way too much.   

Tony, Did you get that frost? I put all my plants in the garage. The frost didn't come. Just fog.

We didn't get the frost that was predicted for here last night, either.  I had covered a couple of trees though, just in case.  I've got a couple more  Aubique Petite figs that I'm hoping will still finish ripening... they've swelled up to nice size and softness, but still awaiting that "droop" that accompanied final stages of ripeness that I saw on the 10 or 12 others that ripened on that tree.  Kinda seems like they've stalled, since they've been this way for a week already.  But the leaves are still green and vital, so with a few more sunny days... maybe I'll get a few more to harvest.  

I've got plenty that I'm sure won't have time to ripen, so I've been knocking those off, hoping to direct energy to the ones that have some hope / reasonable chance.

On nothing more than a whim, I started some green cuttings this past Summer, but I started them in late-July / early-August.  They all rooted.  Now, they all need TLC, and with the cold blast that came in over the last nights, the cuttings had to come in before they went dormant.  I lined them up on my kitchen windows, on the floor, by my sliding glass doors, and all over my kitchen table.  I quickly ran out of room!

So....$162.00 later, I had to buy wire-shelving for my cuttings, and for my other tender plants.  The two shelves are 24" wide, and 42" long.  The whole shebang is mounted on four rubber casters, so I could move the shelving unit around.

There was a time when I used to spend money on myself...now, I spend it on fig trees, plants, and shelves.

You crack me up. The problem is I just got back from Home Depot where I bought more shelves to fit more figs into my house that already has too many plants to begin with. Oh well I don't need any winter clothes this year as it won't get cold . . . right?

Mike...I thought I was the only mental case! 

I have to eat breakfast standing up, and my 92 year old father shares the table with fig cuttings growing in soda bottles.  This morning I couldn't find his damn pills!  I can't go on like this.  My kitchen looks like a nursery!  The shelves will work for a while until I get the next plant-bug up my_ _ _ .  I think I'm going to be next screwball featured on the "Hoarders" TV show.

I guess I could have worse vices.  I should've bought the larger shelves.

I didn't get any frost as they called for. Everything got to live another day. I have 3 in ground trees that aren't covered they will be my indicators of when we do get frost. They're calling for frost again tonight. We'll see. Hope that they're wrong again.

So far, I have been very lucky.  My kitchen windows, and the sliding glass doors all face South, and I get full, blazing sun coming through the doors and windows.  However, in Jan-Feb. this growing area can and does become very dreary...so I predict that some more money -that I can't afford- will be spent on some kind of light set-up.  One thing leads to another....

In addition to growing figs, I also grow specialized succulents known as fat-plants/caudex plants...mostly from South-Africa, (Cyphostemma juttae, and Adeniums), and they also need good sun year round because they photosynthesize with their succulent stems even while they are "dormant".

Yes...more money....adios!

Yeah, Ibrought mine in Sunday and they will stay in until Friday most likely.

Goodness, yep pretty CHILLY in Idaho too!!! My plant are now winterized with hay as insulation, burlap, and white potato sack over the trees, I will use tarp when it snows in 8 weeks (2 months). Atreano and JH Adriatic are still viberant and full of green foliage. Neato! This is the babies first winter! Sooooooo nervous!
