Frost damage!!!

  • ank

Good day, I have a question to ask.  I have planted about 15 fig trees outside about a week ago and most of tem had about 1”- 2” new growth on them.  Last few nights we had about 33F temperature here in Richmond, VA so I had put the plastic bags on them.  This morning I took the plastic off and found out that almost all of the new growth were damaged/killed.  Please advice on what I should do…. Do I just live it alone and see what happens or should I brake off all the killed new growth?  I know I should have not used plastic bags in the first place but I was afraid to put anything heavy on them do to fragility of the new leaves.  I have about 3” of mulch around them so I know that the roots should be fine?  Can that kind of damage kill one year old fig trees?

Thank you in advance,

Anton

Let them be till it is obvious what it completely dead. New growth is more tender and more cold sensitive that mature growth. They will be fine, but will just need to regroup before beginning to grow again.

Well I spent an hour moving all mine back inside my GH and garage yesterday.  We did have frost.  My inground trees look good though.  No tips were burned by the cold.  And the weather is suppose to be 40s at night and 60s by day all week long.  They should be fine for a while.  I'm not taking mine out of the garage till next week.  The farmers in my area are saying we will get another cold snap on the 25th of April.  I just wonder how they know that?

Plastic bags will not protect your plants from frost.
You would need a tarp that will breath. Check out the product on this site.
