Frost Damage

I woke up this morning and found frost covering the ground.  It was pretty cold last night.  But the fig trees still looked ok this morning.  I got home a little while ago and this is what I found.  Some of the trees have still been producing fruit, even though the figs aren't very sweet anymore.  Looks like even that will probably be done now.

Ahhh  Good sleep until Spring

How cold did it get?
Here in my backyard (Tucson), my thermo-gizmo registered 31F as the minimum.
The figs didn't take any apparent damage and are still in steady progress mode
to full dormancy. I ate the last handful of VdB figs yesterday afternoon. You're right,
they aren't as good as last months figs.

I hung incandescent Xmas lights in the citrus trees last night.
Hopefully this isn't the start of another colder than normal winter. Supposed
to dip down to freezing again next week.

Hey Bada,

My very unofficial dollar store thermometer was at 34 degrees when I checked it this morning just before sun rise.  Your trees may be further along in the dormancy process than mine.  That's probably why they handled the cold better than mine did.  Last night was the first really cold night we've had here since last winter.  There are several more nights forecast to be in the mid to low 30's over the next week.  It sure would be nice to have a mild winter again.  Too many frosts.

Looks like an early winter freeze this year. After having many plants die to the ground last year, I've been watering them at night and all the figs are still green and lush. We will see how long that works. I'm still harvesting figs daily and they seem much sweeter as it's gotten colder, maybe like ice wine grapes. Supposed to get into the 20's next week.

after one of my camping trip where my drip lines fail, all my older trees dropped leaves. then we have slightly warmer weather so they put on new leave in aug.. after the 1st frost, all the new leave turned just like the joe's pix above. this happened last yr to, but in spring with last frost. new leave came out and we had last frost which just messed up all the leaves and some new buds.

Looks like FrozenJoe got some frozen figs! ;-)

Time to go dormant fellas...

Is it normal for you to get frost in Phoenix?

I'm not in the City of Phoenix. I'm in a more outlying suburb area, so frosts are a little more common where i live. This will be my fourth winter here. So far it seems like we get a few frosts out here every winter. In a mild winter it might only be 1 or 2. In a harsher winter there can be more.

Which figs are getting sweeter as the weather gets colder?
