Frost Possible Chicago Outlying Area

Last night all my plants came into garage, tonight the same as frost is possible in outlying area's of chicago. High today projected at 60 so plants will go out then back in at sunset tonight and next several days as temps will be too cold at night to risk seting them back.
Sometime yesterday a flock of geese or ducks dropped a smart bomb and scored a direct hit on one of my smaller plants opening leaves and it destroyed a newly emerging leaf and bud 1 of two on plant. We have some retention ponds nearby and they sometimes fly real low overhead i can actually throw rocks and probably hit one if i wanted to in there squadron as they go overhead. ; )
Best Health

martin, the benefit here is i bet you've got some serious bulging muscles from hauling those figs in and out :).

Thanks Martin.  I pay attention to your weather warnings.  Cold here in NY also.  I brought all my trees in.  There are 74 of them and the barn might have been a little too cold.  So, I brought them ALL into the house, as the greenhouse is not done being built.  Wow, was my hubby ever surprised.  Love your posts and your great pictures Martin.

Eve/ near Buffalo, NY zone 6

Hi Mike,
honestly the only bulging muscles i have are in my lower back that i tried to take care of with useing Ben Gay last night. Im still a little sore and im going out in garage now and move them back out on drive way.

Wooosh a blast of cold air came in late this afternoon it was so nice out to about 70-72 degree's my fig plants were out sunning.
Meteorologist was right on when he said in metro chicagoland area its 30 degree's colder than south suburbs. It was like 40 up in far northern area this afternoon, then here the temps just dropped as the wind picked up. Around 6 pm all my plants came in garage as i do not want to set them back now .
Tonight temps will go into the mid 30s once again. The plants that are alive are leafing out nicely and im feeling my back ache more than previous years wheeling them in and out as im not getting any younger.
Pulled a few plants today and trashed them today they were gone.

Surprise!
Up north in Ottawa the minimum temp tonight is balmy 37~38F and my plants are staying outside. We have to get some bonus consolation sometimes.
Tomorrow min is a different story (30F) and I will be using tarp to cover the plants.

We had frost last night here in Toronto.

The local record for the night was -1 deg C ( 30F) and the dew point recorded was -4C (25F).
Does it mean that there could have been the low temperature damage (if any) but no frost formation since it did not reach the dew point?

Akram I hope not specially since my dad took my bigger colasanti with the figs home and its outside in the backyard need to see this weekend if that frost affected the figs.

I feel for you guys and all the weather related work that is involved. It is still hard at times to relate to those temps this time of year.

All the Best
Sal

Martin,

Last week before I left on my next road trip I took inside most of my fig trees in the garage.
The only ones I left out were VBD in a 25gl pot and a few no big deal ones.
The VBD/Negronne is out in plain open and the others are in the corner away from the north wind.

To my surprise the VBD/Negronne is looking better than I expected. The leaves are not fully grown but they are very healthy looking and the best thing about it is it is not showing any signs of FMV they are known for.

Now the question is could there be a connection with the late frost/cold and FMV?

Even my garaged ones are looking as good as they can be for this time of year.

Hi Rafed ,
to be honest i dont really know .
This is what have observed so far. You ready ? I hope i do not bore you with this.  ; )
My Vdb which has Fmv got better later last season much much (hardly noticeable ) better but i call it hiding as it still has it, it does not go away so to speak only hides.
I was looking at it today and it looks great but i did see it faintly with the sun shinning on it as i was inspecting the leaves but only a few leaves showed it and of course the leaves are not full size yet. Same as last year and im thinking as season marches on it will be same as last year as well hardly noticeable if at all. Out of my 1 year plants i lost 3 this season coming out of dormancy , one of them i rooted mid season last year a VdB for my neighbor and it is smaller than the 3 i lost so it seems at leaast to me it can take the cold storage, all the 1year olds were grouped together in garage for storage.
Out of my plants that do have the FmV (not all do) i noticed there symptoms are not all equal, some have only mishappen leaves, some only discoloration in leaves and then
my Ischia Black  - the problem child of all my plants , badly mishappen leaves, stunted, mottled leaves and loss of chlorophyll in leaves. It is just starting to awaken. This plant seems to show EVERY symptom FMV has to give and is severly affected by it. I know my plants that have it as some are growing like a weed 2 are a little slow but steadily growing but ischia black im trying to work with it by and as always trying to get a few more in scion or plants to experiment with as its always been my hope to get one to grow more normal.
Its fun for me when it comes to observing all my plants and trying to help them as best as i can.
The season looks promising so far as this is an early start for me this season.

Martin,

It looks like by Thursday we might be able to take the plants out and this time they may stay out.

Forecast looks promising!

Hi Rafed,
thats great news, my back was just getting used to wheeling them in and out.
The few large plants i have left been doing ok with 42 or so nightly temps as i leave them out.
But the small 1 year olds i have been babying and bring in with temps under about 47 or so after my black madeira had a few buds wilt and did not want to chance the other little guys getting set back although they should be able to take it im just more lerious after looseing a few plants in winter storage.
They all like the rains we had this weekend and perked up nicely i still need to make me or buy a rain barrel or even 2 to make life a tad easier which could give me up to 50 or so gallons each as i have a spout right outside the gate not far from where plants will be in yard and another spout in the yard on other side of house.

Man, that is not fair. It is snowing on my plants which have leafed nicely.
Some are under an overhang but many are temporarily parked in my vegetable patch in the open which is a very sunny spot. The only consolation is that it is light snow at 35F temperature. I hope it is not too late to put tarp over it.

Akram please let us know what happens im curious, im thinking the leaves will curl upwards and you may or may not lose them after you take cover off and some time passes.    Keep your fingers crossed.  ; )
Tonight we are going down to 32 and all my fig trees are coming into garage i cant risk the few plants i have even my most mature ones as well sigh as those are heavy to move around.
Frost warnings are for a rather large area this time around, parts of illinois, parts of indiana, parts of wisconsin, most of michigan.
Remis if you read this bring yours in tonight for peace of mind or throw a blanket over that large one if that one in particular cannot be moved.

Looks like one more night of this cold and then the temps will start to climb.
Just about had enough of this cold!

Too many trees in the garage that been sitting and waiting for the past couple of weeks.

I will double check the forecast for tomorrow night/Friday morning before I take everything out again.

Hate to lose anything now when all seems to be going well.

Rafed
I checked it. It is going to be 32F tonight and 30F tonite at the top of the 5ft fig plant in the open but a lot colder near the pot! So keep away the seedlings.

Akram,

All the babies are and have been inside the house all along. I only had them out a few times for a couple of hours a day during the time ( couple weeks ago ) when the temps were in the 70s and 80s.

Maybe I'll start taking them outside by Friday for a few hours a day.
All the one year old or older will go outside hopefully Friday and will determine every night from then on if I am taking them back inside or not.

Snow expected on the Northern Plains and Northern MidWest. Upto 10 inches. Cold temps to the South.

When is it going to end?

Yup parts of Minnesots, Wisconsin, and Mich are going to see snow, here no snow and temps will be in mid 30s and all my small plants will go indoors for a few nights. The weather man did say we may see a stray snowflake but i have my doubts.

I just hope we don't have a Summer like last years.
I hate to mention it but it worries me.

Tonight  F 37 , my figs going into garage for sure.  Yesterday I transplanted 10 of my cuttings from clear cups to 2 Gal. pots so more figs to work with (i mean drag  in and out of garage)    :)

Took mine in about an hour ago. The gusty wind was making it worse.
I can honestly say I must have taken them in and out at least half dozen times already.
It's tough on the back now-a-days. I'm not as active as I used to be.

Hopefully the next time they go out they stay out.

36 predicted here tonight,  all of the figs i have in garage now xcept
the 4 large container ones 1 or 2 of them are coming in tonight as well.
Yes lots of work here in the colder zones but at least we can move em
i suppose just a pain in the back like Rafed stated.
Man that wind today was a cold one.
Akram quit sending that cold air our way please.  ; )
