Frost Possible Chicago Outlying Area

I don't think it's Akram, Better look behind you. I think it's Paul, All the way from B.C.

Freeze warning in affect in Southeast Michigan for tonight.
I have two pots left outside, I think they will stay outside. I will give them a huge drink before bedtime. They should be fine. They are Negronne/VBD in 25gl pots.

They made it through the freeze a couple weeks ago.
I'm sure they'll be just fine.

I will be leaving Monday morning and won't be back till Thursday or Friday. I think I will keep them in the garage till I get back. Better safe than sorry.

BTW Martin,
Thanks for showing me how to upload the pics, Now nobody is safe. LOL

And why are you guys still living back east? High 70s here today, up to 30" of new growth on many trees, brebas almost full size, Main crop figs forming...

"Tonight Forecast:A few rain showers changing to flurries after midnight. Wind becoming northwest 40 km/h gusting to 60 this evening then diminishing to 20 after midnight. Low zero (freezing)."

I just came home (12:42am) tired and it is dark, cold, windy and drizzly and so no appetite for bringing the pots inside. It all came from the west. I am not sure if flurries are safer than frost but I hope so. I shall find out.

You cold-climate fig-growers are an amazing breed! I don't think I would keep at it if I couldn't grow them in-ground with only the occasional old bed sheet thrown over them for protection in the winter. Good luck to you--I wish I could send a little of our excess heat your way!

20s and 30s for tonight again, This cold weather is going out like a Lion.

Well Rafed, I think it is rather staying like an arctic bear since it is going to be a widespread frost in the area with -2C (28F) and tomorrow night
will be worse with -3C (26F).
I hope tarp covering on top will do. I still do expect some breba by mid-July (I believe so).

I brought all mine including the big container ones in garage yesterday evening just dont have enough items to cover them with unless i group them together then i figure if i do that i just might as well put them in the garage.
Today knowing that tonight the temps will drop down around 32 to 34 with clear night and no cloud cover i left them in garage with the overhead door open for fresh air. Tomorrow i may bring them onto driveway after i see the extented forcast.

I did notice yesterday that some leaves were broken from the hail we previously had. Im glad i dont have as many 30 gallon containers anymore cause there heavy to move especially over the rocks then over the cobblestone walkway then over a little grassy area where they sit for the season useing my handtruck and it has ballbearing wheels. I had thought the 30s temps were not coming back and had moved them all to the yard from the driveway (sigh).
Martin

Well,

Looks like by this weekend we can finally take those figs back out again and hopefully they will stay out for the remainder of the season.
My muscles are still sore from taking them in. Not in the shape I used to be.

50ish at night should be o.k. for the young plants right?
I would like to give Al Gore a peace of my mind and tell him where he and his Global Warning can go.

Yes, it seems so Rafed. We appear to be having the last night at 30F (-1C) with frost warning. So, tonight is
the last haul back to garage or tarp cover on some. That is it. From tomorrow on the plants will have to be on
their own. I already have broken so many nice branches of plants, accidentally detached a number of brebas
because of tangled plants, cooked the top of the plants by not removing the protecting tarp until noon on a
sunny day.  And all this trouble for a race to the few ripe figs between me and the squirrels.

Yup what we do to get some ripe figs and before we know it there back in storage.

That is it. No more frosts for a week and by then we should be in the frost free period until late September (hoping arctic doors don't open unexpectedly....).
There is an old saying in the old countries that after birth mother cats carry their new born babies to seven different locations. The same was situation with fig plants this spring, out and in for frost protection so many times..

Well Akram,
I"m almost tempted to take mine out today. I will think about it some more.
It's 55F right now. The bigger ones will handle it but I don't know about the little ones.

Man this stupid weather last couple days really messed up my bigger plants.
Colasanti Dark from 43 main crop to 15 Bronze Paradiso Lost over 20 Breba figs the high winds and cold really beat the crap out of my plants some of them lost nearly all their leaves what a set back dont think I will be eating much this year again what a disapointment.

Temperature at night getting too low for comfort at this time of the year in fig growth. I understand that such low temperatures at night slows down the fig growth. Anyway we had a couple of good weeks for growth when temperatures stayed above 15C (~60F) day and night (touching 34C /93F) at one point. I hope we get some more warm/hot days like that again.

I am in zone 9 on gulf coast south of New Orleans with only about 7 nights a year with a low temperature below 32 F.  The fig trees here never have much problem with cold, but diseases like rust can be very severe some summers.   Last July and August were especially bad with so much rain!

Some years the citrus must be covered and protected but never fig trees.

JCA, welcome to figs4fun. If you're south of Nawlins then you probably close to me, unless you're down river. I live in Houma, where are you located. Maybe we could get together and talk figs.

I may move south of Miami Florida where is there is no frost most years.  Eventhough the climate in zone 9 is mild, I want zone 10 or 11.  I hate freezes and cold.

Genecolin, are your figs ripe yet?  Mine are still green.   I am not sure what fig cultivar I have because my mother bought it and planted it.  It is probably celeste or brown turkey.  I have meyer lemons, satsumas, and pineapple guava but only one fig tree.

Well no frost here today in Chicago
cause we won the Cup !
Blackhawks Best team in hockey this season!

In keeping with the spirit my fig trees are happy !

JCA, mine are still green also. I did get to eat 1 breba off of my celeste. My LSU Gold (not) lost all of it many breba after a late frost hit them. I was really looking forward to them. I had hundreds on my two trees.
