Frost problem any help please.

Hi guys I'm new to growing figs so any advice would be great. My name is lee and I live in the south east of England. I brought my first fig last year just labled as fico Bianco hardy fig (is this a variety) . I planted it in a sunny spot in my garden. We had a very warm march and lots of healthy leaves came out and many figs looking great. Well I was on holiday last week and we had 2 nights of frost and all the leaves died back but the figs look ok. What should I do cut it back or leave it. It's about 4ft tall. Thanks a lot.

Frost will nip and shrivel the leaves but only severe and persistent frost or hard freeze would damage the wood... I would leave the leaves alone and let the plant recover and put out new growth. If the tips of the growing branches turned black then they may have frozen but just an above freezing frost wouldn't ordinarily kill the wood...

The growing tips are still green but all the leaves have died back. Thanks for your advice.

Welcome to the forum!.It should put out some new leaves, I lost some baby leaves around the same time,it only caught a couple of varieties which tried to leaf out earlier than the others, mine are pushing out new leaves now.You only need to prune if the wood itself dies back,I only lost one tip this winter on quite young growth(still mostly green) on my Jerusalem(Said to be a Synonym for Longue d'Aout). We had a couple of freezes down to about -3 or 4 here a while back, the bud shrivelled and then the tip went black and dried out so it's pretty obvious when it happens.I just pruned back to above the next bud and now it's budding out in about 3 different places so it's all good.I have never heard of Fico Bianco Hardy, but Fico Bianco is a white Italian fig(literally means White Fig)

Thanks haslamhulme I will leave it and see what happens.

Just want to second the above. Wait until mid summer before you do any cuts. Figs are very vigorous and the dead looking branches might be alive just healing.

Hi The frost got my fig trees last week the leaves shriveled up & fell off but are now pushing new leafs & buds are forming the baby figs are still there & getting fat so i would leave them alone & let the trees do there own thing

Thanks again for all your advice. I'm now confident it will be ok. And hopefully the figs that are on it will be edible later in the year. 🙂
