Frost protection

DeWitt Frost protection fabric. The 3 oz product is supposed to make a 10 deg difference from the outside/surrounding temperature.

See the N-sulate and thermal blanket products.

Gemplers sells the 1-1/2 oz product, rated for 6-8 deg. difference. Probably could  double it up to make a greater difference.

Many ag supply stores handle the products, as well.

Haven't tried it, but looks promising for my east coast friends to experiment with.

I used to use this kind of stuff (I used Agribon 50 rowcover, a similar product). It didn't give much of anything in the way of protection - the figs died back to how high I had piled the leaves around them. I think the major problem with rowcover is the wind just blows right through it. Thats why I switched to using the reflective bubble insulation: get a strong wind barrier. For two years in a row with the reflective bubble wrap I have had zero dieback.

Jon: thanks for the link. Did some research on this recently & didn't find these folks--just up the road in MO--as it were. I e-mailed them because I didn't see a way to purchase on their site. They sent me this link:

Scott: I have good luck with leaves & burlap but always looking for more & better. Could you give more details on the *reflective bubble* stuff.
Appreciate it.

Steven, here is the stuff I use:

TempShield insulation

It has the advantage of reflecting back the ground heat to warm at night, while also reflecting off the sun on a hot day to keep the plants from budding out too early. I don't need to put anything under the cover with the figs.

Here is a picture of the covered figs:

Here is a thread on the GW fig forum where I wrote more about it (scroll down a ways):
