Frost Warning in NJ

Yes, there is frost warning over all North-East of the continent. Eastern part of Ontario (incl Ottawa) has the same situation. We had first warning on September 19 but plants in urban areas survived with no protection at that time. I brought guava and flowering plants inside but left the fig plants for defoliation and dormancy until later this month (hoping temperatures not to go below 25F (-4C).

The posts sequence in this thread seemed reverse (wrt SteveNJ first post) or was I disoriented!?

For those who have not heard, there is a damaging frost warning in north NJ tonight and tomorrow night. For those with fruit, protect them as there will be some warmer days later in the week.

Yes the post times seem wrong. It is about 32 degrees outside here (NJ). I haven't checked for frost yet but I did cover my trees with plastic. It is too early for dormancy yet and the temps should be around 70 at end of the week.

Yes post did reverse somehow, we did get a frost i had posted pictures over the weekend, i thought was like a heavy morning dew until soon after i was in car and wipers did not swipe it away but the wiper fluid did. A mild frost not hard enough for my tree's as leafs did not wilt at all, now temps today may hit 70 for high, oh mother nature.

Jon is probably saying, it's nice an sunny in San Diego...

I'm sure it is Bass. But Jon is a gentleman and wouldn't brag ;)

Oh yes,  (much respected) Jon did brag/tease about fig-heaven-sunny-San-Diego before!
He even encouraged us (cold-north) fig-nuts to move there.
Also, he may also be blessed with the (in)famous fig-wasp...

Being a NY / NJ native, I will reserve comment about the west coast. I visit frequently on business but I can't seem to get used to flip-flops ;)

i just checked this afternoon, and luckily non of my trees were affected by the frost. although I saw some frost on windshields this morning.
we're expecting temperatures near 70 later this week.

Frost warning is still in effect for tonight. I had a few spots of frost on the ground but the plastic I put over the trees kept them clear.

To some extent I stopped worrying about frost warnings in the fall (in my situation). The frost warning here is issued by the weather station situated a few kilometers away in the open near the Airport. Living in an urban area, I noticed that most of the time my plants escape damage whenever there is frost warning in the fall and it may be due to the heat from the buildings, car exhausts and chimney exhausts from home heating that keeps the localized temperatures above freezing unless the minimum predicted temperature is 25F or below.

However it worries me in the spring when the tender leaves are frost bitten just around freezing point. This happened to my white fig this year. Its tender leaves froze and later never fruited even though it had ten figs last year when I bought it from Grimo.

I would agree that he frost in the spring is more important but I know some folks still have ripening figs that they might want to protect considering we will have some 70 degree days later this week and very sunny. I happen to live in an area that has a local microclimate that is always several degrees colder than what is seen on the reports.

Yes further away from city like mentioned gets colder, out in the boondocks we say. Also i pay most attention to spring frost each dat as i move tree's in and out and fall a little less until this year as season seems a little extended with temps up and down . As late September brought us a record weekend rainfall 3 days and record for 1 day as well, then temps got real cold, then temps were warm then cold now warm again in 70s last night we had a inch of rain. Yes weather for me has been a challenge and from what i have read also many other places as well. I still have 1 tree producing and should have more figs today and perhaps in several if weather holds this week which they say it will. Hopefully the figs will be not to bad to eat. So i will maybe post a few more pictures of 1 tree still going .

Hi Martin
Having read your posts from Zone 5 (with abundant ripe figs), which is the same as my Zone 5 minus many ripe figs, I believe every location should have two zone identifiers like ZW (Winter hardiness Zone) and ZS (Summer easiness Zone) or something like that. That can make us more realistic i.e. with realistic expectations.
Any way, the next few days are going to be balmy (68F hi/45F lo) here and the five figs still surviving and fattening will finally get a chance to ripen. No, the squirrel have no chance on these ones because of the tight security but I cannot say that for raccoons because they can rip open everything. They cleaned my only grapevine in one night two weeks ago, just a night or two before I intended to harvest. This also show that figs need more heat-units than grapes because grapes do ripen here.

Yes your right about the zone thing, them raccons sure can be sneaky eh, they steal at night when most asleep, as for heat units yes your right about figs needing all they can get this is were i pay attention to in our climate unlike Texas or florida where i dont think i would have to worry about heat but other thonks like humidity and fig leaf rust, back to heat units i find best for me in spring to bring in and out of garage to get a head start, finally when after mothers day i move them to back yard on that hot cement patio which gives them i guess heat units as the cement as we most know will stay quite warm even in fall for a while , only draw back is the watering every other day , if we have a spell of real hot weather i bring out the root feeder to really soak em good. I personally think if i grew them inground i would not have the type of season i usually have or be able to grow some of the types i aim to have or have already due to there hardiness as im stubborn and not satisfied growing just the types that would only do well for my climate no no i want more than what does good here as i love a challenge as i have a type or 2 still small that should not produce but im going to try my best and see what happens good or bad, luckily now i have time for this.

What is frost? New temp records in San Diego, today. 98 at Figs 4 Fun (which isn't fun). ;-))

Funny guy! We'll have to bring you in off the beach and toughen you up a bit. When I get some snow (I get alot) or an ice storm (get those often too) I'll call you up to help me dig out. :o)
