fruit sites

The reason I've acquired more fig trees in the past 8 months than any other plant is this forum.  But, I do like other fruits, just little or no info on them.  I love guavas and looking for Madagascar seedless guava if anyone has one for trade or purchase.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a Guavas4Fun site (hint hint..someone please start one).

I'm having trouble imagining much enthusiasm for Guavas4fun.  Then again, I didn't think figs were that interesting (eating traderjoe boxed figs that diabolically mixes Black Mission and Cali Brown Turkey reminds me of just why Brown Turkey is a slander upon figs).

Wouldn't Myrcaria4Fun be more of a big thing?

Pawpaws, white sapotes, and other highly perishable fresh fruit definitely need their own fanatics to get the ball rolling...

I get it totally!  I found a wonderful wine making forum for viticulture.  It's like this one, only on the topic of growing and processing grapes.  Garden web is a piece of work!!

Try finding info on guavas, macadamias, olives, avocados or dozens of other fruits some of us wish to grow.  They seem to be east coast based, and are clueless about Southern, Subtropical and/or Mediterranean gardens.

And it's not just fruit!  It goes beyond that.

I've got 6 avocado seed sprouting in water at the moment.  The guava seeds I ordered on Ebay didn't make it, but given the land, they can be locally purchased.  Our orange and grapefruit trees are heavy with fruit.  Grapevines finding their way up the tallest of palm trees..

Figinatic is it similar or the same as Thai giant seedless? If so I may be able to help

Figfinatic,

I love guavas too. I too wish that there was a site dedicated to guavas. Just like figs but perhaps more so,  people have not been exposed to guavas. You cannot generally buy one that is really good.

I currently grow 3 varieties, a large Thai white and a smaller white and strawberry guava.

Last year I grafted the Thai white into some seedlings I grew. Of the 5 I grafted 2 were successful. One of those bore 2 funny looking fruit  this year. They were on one small branch but had a lot of wrinkles. They looked odd. Couple of weeks ago I harvested them. Take a look at the pictures.

Nana7b- how did those taste? The ones I'm looking for are bumpy just like that.
I'm not exactly sure how the Madagascar one tastes, bu. I hear it's super.

Shah8- you really must not have tasted a good guava yet. My Mexican white cream guava is probably the best. When ripe, it's green on outside and white slightly creamy on inside with minimal seeds. There are some awful ones I've bought at farmers markets. The yellow ones with the pink on the inside have an intoxicating smell but most I've tried are either over ripe or under ripe and they are really bad that way. Like figs, you got to grow your own to get good ones. I wish there were a site because I just spent 2 yrs growing what I thought was another Mexican white from home depot but turned out to be a yellow variety that gets too mushy easily. Sites like these actually point you to some good sellers and help identify the variety you want to buy.

I've had those awful green guavas with the red flesh and rock seeds everywheres.  I'd much, much rather eat rose apple and ohi apples.  I got seed for vietnamese seedless (tiny soft seeds), but they never sprouted.  I also have a cherry guava that's much less interested in fruiting than my suriname cherry.  Soo, guavas are in my bad books, even pineapple guavas.

Always for the guava paste (with a good cheese!), though.

Figfinatic,

The fruit of the seedless was not very sweet as they were not perfectly ripe.
They were mildly sweet and crunchy. It was quite good, but if I had left it on the plant for another week it would have been better. While trying to take a picture of the plant the tiny branch holding the two fruit snapped while moving the pot. I have since air layered the small branch(bud sport) hoping to make a plant of it to see if it will keep the seedless characteristic.

The mother plant produced sweet and flavorful fruit last year. This year the fruits are much bigger as I fertized them often. Now I have to wait till some ripen to perfection to see if the fertiliztion made a difference in the flavor and sweetness.

I did see the image of the Indonesian seedless in GW. The fruit reminds me of a baby Beluga whale. Check out the following video. It mentions the Indonesian seedless. That may be a source for it.

Shah8: I think you are trying the bad guavas.  yes, most of the green with pink flesh and rock seeds don't taste good, especially under/overripe.  I remember buying some of those and throwing them immediately all away after tasting one.   I stopped buying guavas from farmers markets anymore.  Don't like pineapple guavas either.   You really gotta try a good one.  Maybe I'll send you one a good one next time my tree fruits.  Hopefully, you live near CA.

The best ones I've had from markets are when I was actually in Asia.

Nana7b: Thanks.  I'm getting in touch with Papaya Tree nursery.  I hope they do mail order.

Figfinatic:  Hint, pony-up and start one. See http://www.websitetoolbox.com/forum-hosting/index.html

All it takes is time and money.
