Fungus Gnats Again

I haven't tried it but I read that 1 part peroxide(%3) to 4 parts water will kill the larvae on contact.

Octopusinc, thanks for sharing the info and the pics. I certainly like the idea.

Octopusinc, I have  butterwort working on the gnats for me. I don't recall the species, I got it from a friend and it is a good and easy grower. And very effective on the gnats. I would like to try more carnivorus plants but it seems to me that most go dormant in winter. I would think that keeping sundews in winter is a tough proposition. Can you share any cultural hints?

FiggyFrank , thanks for the report on bounce . I'll try them also.

JoAnn let us know how that herbal tea works , but I hope you don't get them !

Pete , going to use DE on top of my pots also.

Right about now , I'm going to try everything LOL!! I have a lot of rooted cuttings and have to keep them out of those when I up pot , although they will be in plastic containers , I don't trust those little pesty critters.

Read this page (link below) and follow directions. It has worked for me so far. I also go after the flying adults with Safer soap. I called Safer about this and they assured me their product was affective on both adults and eggs/larvae. Between the mosquito dunks (see link) and the safer soap my grow room is finally coming under control. Hope this helps.

Also the Virginia Tech insect id lab says that fig plants can take being watered with warm water that's hot enough to kill the eggs, but I lost the email and do not know the exact temperature. I did not try this as I was afraid I might harm the baby figs.

Michael, I am already using the mosquito dunks but I am still looking for something for the flying around dudes. Do you spray the Safer soap solution on the leaves of the
plants or are you spaying them while they are flying around or both? Also, how are you treating for larvae/eggs with the Safer soap?

I just spray the stuff like a maniac all over everything as the flying ones really anger me. They get into my bed room and crawl around on my computer screen at night when I'm watching Netflix.

I've had good results spraying directly on the dirt. I do spray into the air trying to "shoot down" the adults.
I have not sprayed the under sides of leaves.
In my sun room I've just sprayed the plants from above getting on the soil and the tops of the leaves and have not used the Bt in there yet. The safer soap does paper to be working so far in there.

Thanks Michael. I am at an all out war against them. They drive me nuts. I am getting some Diatomatious earth (food grade) today and working on the
carnivorous plants also.

I use the sticky yellow paper on plastic holders, they do nice job on the adults. You can find them at any greenhouse supply place, or ebay. And of course the butterwort experiment is working well. Safers is a good product too and I have used that in the past. I prefer not to us too many chemicals if I can avoid them, but Safers isn't named Safers for nothing, it is a pretty safe product for in home use.

I have broken open some used tea bags and put the tea leaves about an inch thick into a plastic container and have kept it moist for two weeks now and there are larvae crawling around in it.

I'm training the gnats to lay their eggs where I want them to lay them. and then after 14 days (before they turn into flies), give or take two days depending on how warm the room is, I will toss the whole mess outside or maybe even flush it down the pipes.

Then I start all over.
I suppose one could have a few of these egg traps going at different times.

It all means less eggs in my plant pots and that's good. It's free and that's good too.

I also just got some neem oil today and will try to drench the soil to see how that works. The back of the bottle says 1 1/2 tsp per quart of water.

Sammy, I like your plan! that makes a lot of sense. I have also, used the inner plastic bag of cereal boxes to make little plant domes, I just make a few holes at the top for breathing..and some of them got in there, but in the bag, they can find the hole out, so I squease the bag and they're GONE!  If any hatch I can see them in the bag and I tap the container, they go to the top and I kill them.  Never occurred to use the tea bag, I guess a tea bag with a dome would be a good trap.  I also read of vinager/apple cider trap, so, doing those with a dome.  I have mine under control, but I am on patrol all the time... it is tiring.

Barry,

The only butterwort I grow is Pingucula Bhoemica

^ this picture isn't mine, just a stock photo I found on google, mine is still pretty tiny.

I've only been into carnivorous plants for a couple years, but in my experience all of the carnivores ranging from Australia through Thailand do really well in some combination of sphagnum, pumice, and canadian peat.  I keep a bog box that I started as a full bed of sphagnum then once it got rolling I buried my carnivorous pots among the moss and keep a dome on it under lights to contain the humidity.  It works really well for every variety I grow so far.  Check out a book called The Savage Garden.  It covers just about every attainable carnivorous plant.

Also on this topic of random books and fungal gnats, a book called Carrots Love Tomatoes has all sorts of nifty tidbits on using plants to repel certain pests, and just other random helpful hints on companion planting.

I'm familiar with Carrots Love Tomatoes, and I may have heard of the Savage Garden, but haven't read it. Thanks! I suppose you basically have a large terrarium there with the appropriate media for carnivores. Pretty cool. My Butterwort is still small and is just growing on the windowsill in a sand a peat soil mix which is in turn in a dish of water. I don't have the room for a set up such as yours as my light stands are packed to the gills but I would love to try that

BLB, some Sundews do not need a winter dormancy.  See http://www.cobraplant.com/caresheets/tropicalsundews

Thanks MichaelTucson for posting the link to the bye bye gnats thread.  I've been gnat free since that thread.  I also have three inside carnivorous plants....they were covered with gnats but the mites got rid of the gnats eggs.

Has anyone ever tried a Pyrethrin containing product such as the product below to control fungus knats?  I saw this today at Lowe's for $5.97.

Steve, I just used some Bon-Neem Fungicide-Miticide-insecticide  which contains Pyrethrins. I sprayed it on the top of soil where I saw them and it killed the flying
dudes dead quick.

Also, in the moth ball thread here last week, I read that you can put one moth ball on the soil, wrap the entire plant in plastic sheeting, seal for a week, and the gas from the ball kills em so dead, even their larvae can't live.

Just got a box of moth balls yesterday for the eventual gnats that may come around.  So far, gnat free since the last batch many months ago.

Suzi

Someone told me that if you put wine in a spray bottle and spray around the plants the gnats will drink it, get drunk, and die. I just laughed.
Has anyone heard of this?

Luigi

@Greg

Pretty, carnivorous plants... interesting. I like it.

My C plants will be here Thurs to eat the gnats

Luigi, fungus gnats look an awful lot like fruit flies, and anywhere there is open wine, fruit flies will flock.  They will also flock to saucers filled with apple cider vinegar with a drop of soap and a teaspoon of sugar.  They drown trying to eat it all up!  We've caught a lot that way, but I bet they are different....

Suzi

My wife couldn't take the gnats anymore so I wiped them out, I think. Yesterday, I applied some Mosquito dunk tea to all the pots to get the larvae. Today, I was looking through the local garden center and found this stuff called Don't bug me by Foxfarm. I was going to go soap or oil route but last year it didn't do much. I sprayed all the pots and leaves this afternoon and...... Dead fungus gnats everywhere. Hopefully I got them all. Overall very happy.

I have some carnivourous sundews on order and a butterwort on the way to handle any survivors. If there are none they are off to the greenhouse where they'll find something to eat for sure.

Jason, good luck, I hope you did get them all. I did the BT thing and about 2 weeks later they were back (hence this thread). Now i am using some pyrethrin spray by Bon-Neem. I also
have sundews and butterworts on the way.

No no.. Get them drunk! Use a splash of dessert wine, a drizzle of dawn soap, fill water half full :-)
Thousands died in this solution too. Or maybe I am finding an excuse to open a bottle of wine (wink wink)

Serious. It works

Jennifer
