Fuzziness on cuttings in Humidity Chamber- Is this a good sign?

I can't tell if this is a good sign or not... (never done this before)
The fuzziness at the nodes and stuff. Never done this before.
I do have a heat mat on but no overhead lights. I figured to wait until there are leaves? My thermometer tells me the ambient in the storage bin is around 70-73 (though it said 68 when I got up this morning...) Its freezing here these days!

Any idea good or bad?

Hey Luigi. Mold is never a good thing, just clean it off. I use a simple soft tooth brush and lightly brush it off, others will chime in on their own methods. Your chamber might be a bit too humid.

I'm a newbie, but I would wipe them down with some Clorox wipes if you have them. I agree with it being too humid. Your cuttings look wet and that is mold youre seeing.

Allow some others to advise, but definitely pop open the lid and allow some fresh air in.

scratch a little bark off and see if it is green. If green clean with 10% bleach water. If cuttings have only been rooted for couple days take them out and soak them for 30 seconds in bleach water then rinse. All cutting should be cleaned before rooted because they have mold spores etc on them bleach water removes these spores. And the top of cuttings also can be,wrapped in thin layer of clear grafting tape. Only the top of cutting that is not covered by media. New growth will brake through the tape. Hope this helps. Boo! Thanks guys. Hopefully this is just a little set back. Do i also need to clean the perlite now?

Rich is right.  Those cuttings may be dead.  I would dump everything out but hold on to the cutting and make sure it moves with the perlite in case there are roots below.  Scratch just a small piece of bark.  If there's no green then that internode is dead.  Go past a node and scratch again.  If you have 1 live internode there's still a chance to get a good plant.  If none of them have any green the cutting is dead.  Either way the perlite is going to have mold spores and should be thrown away.

Gah! Perhaps I need to leave the lid of my storage bin elevated a little bit so there is constant fresh air? I guess I didn't really understand how to do a 'humidity chamber'...
I also was trying to start some pepper seeds in the same chamber. I hope I didn't ruin those as well. Perhaps I'll spray some hydrogen peroxide on the soil now...

Based on my experience, agreeing with rcantor, I believe these cuttings will have difficulty in surviving.

For the last three years I received cuttings from the same place and each time  the white cotton like fuzz appeared on the cuttings in the paper bag or in the cup and eventually the bark becomes mushy and dead on all cuttings all three years.
Normally I have close to 90+ success in rooting but the cuttings from specific sources always start this white cotton like fuzz on the nodes, top and bottom. I start believing that somehow the bark has high moisture contents which can happen when the cuttings freeze or hydrated for longer than needed.

Your cuttings seem better than mine. Miracles happen so use all suggestion provided here and let us know what happens.

They may be ok . Clean them and don't cover them just leave top off. Kinda like Jons baggy method no need to cover, just keep strained perlite damp.

I have never had a cutting with mold on it survive, and I've scrubbed, rubbed, and bleached, peroxided and used every bit of advice on this forum.

Not a fan of humidity chambers mainly because I'm too lazy to keep the proper temp, air flow, and all that is involved.  I rooted many with one plastic cup punched with air holes upside down over another.  This was early in my rooting days, and I used peat and perlite, not understanding the danger of fungus gnats lurking.

I hope your cutting survives.

What variety are these cuttings...???  I would try to get cuttings from around the neighborhood if possible. There may be a craigslist ad near your area with fig related stuff for sale. Ebay has some low priced cuttings, Chicago Hardy, Kadota, Mission, Celeste, Conadria etc.  KK sells some small trees or cuttings, he is in NJ........Keep an eye out fellow F4fun members sometimes give out cuttings for shipping only or a very small price..... Free is always Better...LOL

A lot of people are replying here, so that's really good to see. I use a humidity chamber and also have seen the beginings of fuzz, I dab w a q-tip w alcohol. As a general matter I am realizing you do not need it to be that humid in the chamber, but it will dry out quick if you leave it a crack open permanently. leave it open a few hours to dry out. It should be warmer in there, I hope your heat mat has a thermometer, if not, get one. $32 on Amazon. Put a humidity thermometer in there as well. It should read about 80%. But your cuttings need not be glistening. My T5 lights evaporate enough water to allow some misting, but you do not need to water the cuttings very much, at least not until you see roots. As Ottawan says, some cuttings just are of particular quality that not much can be done with them. It can be frustrating.

I really appreciate all the response! Its actually not that wet in the clear bin at all. I'll measure later... There is hardly any condensation on the plastic sides... I think the "glistening" on the one twig was from a drop of water when I though it needed more humidity and I was adding it... At this point I'm thinking of throwing these away and starting over... I have a bunch of sticks and these were just the "lesser" ones. Should I do the scratch test at the nodes before trying the other sticks?
Rafael, I didnt buy a thermometer for my heat mat but I have these raised on a plastic shoebox lid above the mat (within the storage bin.) I have no lights on these because I though things don't need light until they get leaves?
These cuttings came from a HUGE unknown honey tree down in Florida... Perhaps I didn't wrap these well when I put them in the fridge (no paper tower, just bleached and dried and then saran and a baggie.) Now I'm worried about all the other twigs i have in the fridge. Perhaps I've ruined them all...

I've only seen this when I used the humidity dome.  I wiped it off.  Cuttings came out OK.

Fungus grows even on healthy cuttings becasue there is sometime dead tissue on them as well. Use a toothbrush and gently rub them away and use a weak clorox solution (1 teaspoon per gallon of water) and use a papel towel dip and wipe the affected parts.

Many time I get them on my cuttings and I simple take care of them and the cuttings root. If the cuttings are bad/dead, the fungus will come back very soon and you may want to check if they really have a chance.

Luigi

A thermometer is essential, even with a buffer you can cook the cuttings (bad, very bad) and the heat mats can get very hot without the control. 78-80 F is the ideal range. The probe will allow you to regulate that.

Also, I bathe my cuttings in an antifungal bath for 15 mins before rooting, called "Chinosol." It helps keep mold away.

Those cuttings remind me of ones I took last year in late February in southern MD after all the cold weather we had.  I did the scratch test on a few and thought I saw green but they molded within a week in spagnum moss.  Later I saw the mother trees and understood why - most of the top growth was dead.

Same thing happened to me last year with Maltese Falcon and CdD gris from eBay. Mold started to form within couple days in humidity dome. Not one cutting from this seller survive. Had other cuttings in the same dome from different sources and they all rooted.
