I think that fig is now on everyone's list, I know I would like one too if only to look at the purple pulp

I have spent a couple of days in North West Spain (Galicia) in personal affairs and could only devote part of the morning of departure to a quick visit to a nearby small nursery . Remembered then the famous dark fig 'Galicia Negra' and inquired where could I get some information on this fig. The fellow running the place could not remember such variety in his native Galicia and said that I may have been confused by some fig names mix up !
What fig is this ? , Common, San Pedro ? What are its origins ? If someone knows, pls
let me know. Thank you
Cheers
Francisco

I was just looking at the latest ebay auction on the "galicia negra" fig . . up to $122 . . .hmmm . . I was searching the web on this fig
and found this thread from you all . . I also found the source of the picture used on the ebay auction and it was posted in 2010 by a
person on a forum from a Spanish group, and the person who posted that foto called them "Napolitana Negra".

Coincidentally . . . Adriano's site, he speaks of the Napolitana Negra as an extra large fig and very flavorful from Spain.

here's the thread I found where the fig was mentioned . . . the author was talking about these figs and it was her neighbor's tree
she was getting them from. In Spanish of course http://www.infojardin.com/foro/printthread.php?t=202326&page=11&pp=15

holy cow.. the first posting went for $405. wow..

Pete,
The $122 price is for the cutting, not for a tree
Mark

i know.. i mean i like figs.. but $122 for 2 cuttings.. i wish i was that rich.

This fig was from spain, it is not the true Napolitana Negra as per the grower who has napolitana negra, his neighbor's fig has darker pulp and performs better and better tasting. To avoid confusion of this variety with the Napolitana negra I named it Galicia Negra, as it was an unknown originally and grown in Galicia area. Picture was used with permission.

I haven't read all three pages of comments but this response definitely peaked my interest. I don't know what Spain's definition of 'cooler climate' is but anything that performs in a cooler climate peaks my interest, regardless of pulp color ;)

>400 bucks is too rich for me. Have a new house to save for. Maybe in a few years when it is more common. I will add it to my wish list and some day... maybe.

Congrats Howie! I hope your family enjoys the fruit.
btw your profile pic is uber cute.

Congrats to the winning bidder of two cuttings this morning. This selection continues to be in high demand, fetching $257.51. I thought my bid was high, but not high enough! :)

Regarding the Spanish forum comments, I used Bing to translate it and it's pretty clear that this is not Napolitana Negra. This is the translation of the last paragraph of the comments linked above:

And speaking of something else: yesterday I was hanging around the fig tree in my neighbor and I observed that increasingly has more and more figs, and it continues to produce unless they crack (notwithstanding any other weak Frost and a few days of rain). In addition, I thought it was a black Neapolitan, but not, because while the figs are externally identical to the of a fig tree mia which is black Neapolitan, inside are very dark, and the best... they are very rich rich.

What in the heck happened? I heard from a friend, that the pic of the Galicia negra was a different pic? Is that true Bass?? I did harvest a single fig and the pulp was purplish black. More black than purple. I do have several figs developing and I will post pics ASAP.

I'd love to see your fig porn, Howie. I especially want to hear how it tastes. You're one of the elite few who can provide us with this info and I'm glad you're generous with it.

Thanks Nicole, my pup is now an 80 pound baby!!

I promise as soon as its bigger, I will give out free cuttings. Right now the plant is 18 inches and breaking dormancy. Along with 3 little figs!

Howie,

Great shot of a good-looking animal. I am not sure that I have anything on your wish list, but I hope to have some started before too long.

You dont have to have anything on my wishlist, A GN cutting is yours when its big enough.

So someone starts a thread (forget who) asking if jakeh2218 is a legitimate seller on eBay and then, after getting confirmation that his sale of Galicia Negra is legitimate, the thread gets deleted. That stinks, IMO. Still plenty of more time left on this auction so I don't think it will make any difference anyways. Enough folks are watching it....

Unfortunately people can delete any thread they start. Even including all the responses of others.

There used to be a really good thread here about figs with red tips - there were many very interesting responses that people took their time to write. Then the thread starter (don't remember who - and it really doesnt matter) in a heated moment, deleted the entire thing.

I can understand wanting to delete some threads, but perhaps after 24 hours of starting a thread, the orginal poster can still retain the right to delete his own content, but he/she should not have the right to delete everyone else's comments too. Even this thread - the original poster could just delete the entire thing on a whim.

This has happened more than once on this board that when on leaving, people delete threads they have started. And much good information is lost...

I wonder if Jon can restore them. I'm a moderator at bananas.org and can restore threads and/or posts unless another moderator has done a "hard delete". That forum using vbulletin software though, which is different than here.

Harvey, thanks for bringing this one up. I was wondering about the Galicia Negra. Especially since it's 4 days out and over $100. Means it has to be something special!

And the ebay sellers source you confirmed was Bass.

I was a moderator at a news forum (talk about heated discussions, lol) that also used Vbulletin. That site was set up so that people could only delete or edit what they said for 24 hours - and never what anyone else had posted. When people can delete entire threads, including other people's input and even their posted photos, it makes one think twice about spending time or effort writing anything long and (hopefully) informative.

As for what can be retrieved here, only Jon knows. :)

Bass, any updates on your mother tree this year? Come on, do hold out, I saw something you posted recently and you need to share your photo with others. ;)
