The picture shows a beautiful fig, juicy and colorful, but does anyone know how it tastes? The seller uses the usual adjectives: “tasty”, “rich” “sweet” “excellent’, which are repeated often for most of the fig cuttings for sale on eBay.
What makes the flavor of this variety so special that people would pay hundreds of dollars without ever tasting it? Once the fig is in your mouth, pretty pictures are of no importance.
I’ve waded through the many posts about “Galica negra” and everyone talks about the auction, the price, the pretty color. I found a few hints at the flavor:
Bass himself says: “This fig was from spain, it is not the true Napolitana Negra as per the grower who has napolitana negra, his neighbor's fig has darker pulp and performs better and better tasting. To avoid confusion of this variety with the Napolitana negra I named it Galicia Negra, as it was an unknown originally and grown in Galicia area.” (Another post on the board says Napolitana negra is the same as Valle Negra.)
Howie73x posts about the flavor: “Mine fruited indoors, last year and the color looked beautiful! It didnt taste so good, since it was under LED lighting tho….My Salem dark fruited indoors under LEDS and it tasted amazing!”
Perhaps it wasn’t just the lights that affected the taste?
Octopusinc describes the flavor as “bursting with deliciousness" but also doesn't say anything more.
Does anyone know where the taste would be in with the usual flavor categories:
Sugar fig,
Honey fig, Bordeaux berry fig- (dark figs with sweet rich berry flavor described as "jammy" can be raspberry like flavor)
Dark berry fig- (sweet dark figs with rich berry flavor usually complex flavor)
Adriatic berry fig (light figs usually green or yellow with berry flavored interior can range from sweet, honey, etc)
Miscellaneous fig- Black Madeira, Preto, etc (including others that generally have a flavor of their own- peachy, melon, syrup, etc)
Can anyone tell me why this fig is so special, especially compared to all the delicious figs in the world, besides the pretty purple pulp, the price and the drama around getting one?
