Gashing to ripen

Does gashing a Common or San Pedro fig do anything to help in ripening? Anyone ever tried it?

I've seen references where people gash (make a slice in the fruit) Sycamore figs that wouldn't otherwise ripen.

I never tried gashing figs before.  However I have noticed that figs that get pecked at by the birds seem to ripen faster.

This paper about gashing (slicing) Sycamore fruit might be interesting for people who have trouble getting their Carica to ripen in time.

I noticed the same.  In the Seed Savers list there's a fig who's owner said that in Italy his family would poke the figs with a needle to get them to ripen earlier.  I tried that after reading it to one of my figs, but it was too late in the year and nothing came of it.  Something to try next year.
