Well my Saturday was good.  In the low 70s.  I got to move some clear cupped cuttings into 1 gallon pots.  Introduced some other trees to the sun.  Today's high is in the upper 40s with rain in the forecast.  I got to accomplish something!

Oh wow , is that poisonous?

YEP! It's the time of year for Garter snakes to wake up.
 Good looking fig.    Fredfig

I can use a belt. Let it get a little bigger. Ok much bigger.

It's far from spring here. There are snow flurries today.
But last weekend it got up to 70 and I seen my first frog in the pond.

Yes FMD decent weekend made it around 32 for high yesterday , this morning saw some birds out including geese buzzing around.
Going to be 35 today and in mid 30s all next week figs still snoring in garage.

Oh no! Snakes! Since you brought it up, I googled the 3 kinds of snakes that prevail on our new property per the neighbors. One, gopher snakes. They are harmeless, can grow 6' long, and eat rodents, rabbits, and are helpful, BUT they look much like the venomous rattle snake (also in the area) which can kill a grown man! Rattlers do warn prior to striking, and I did just get a huge hiking stick to beat them off if necessary, but summer is coming and out they come! King snakes love to eat Rattle Snakes, so they are good to have around. I worry about the similarity between the gopher snake and the rattle snake, though.

I'll be planting the first in-ground fig, probably Panachee, in a gopher basket sunk into the ground, tomorrow. The irrigation dude is starting a week of fixing the leaks on that hill we now own, and I will place it next to a working dripper! I'll ring the trunk with gopher wire for protection against voles. That will be the first tree, and I'll need to repeat it over 300 times for the grape vines and other figs and fruits.

Suzi

Nice pictures FMD. We are still in FL , planting foundation plantings ( needed all new ones)  , a few blueberry bushes , pomegranates , a "cocktail" citrus tree and avocado so far.   and starting some privacy screening maybe next week.

Suzi- lots of work there !!

Our son and daughter in law have yet to have their first child. We'll help out a couple of weeks after and will then travel back to NY.

Hope everyone has a great St. Patrick's Day !!

You go Suzi! I like your gopher deterent plan because it matches what I would do exactly if I had burrowing rodent problems. We shall see if I end up with tree rat problems in the future, I haven't used my BB gun in a long time. It's a pretty effective training tool.

Gopher snakes, we call them bull snakes, always freak me out a bit too. I always have to do a second look to make sure they aren't a rattler. But they are good to have around for rodent control.

My weather is the same as Martin's, just a day later. No real spring weather here yet, it's going to be cold all week. We might have some snow Monday or Tuesday. Maybe things will warm up by the time next week rolls around.
