Genetic Structure of Figs

I found this article and want to share it with interested members. It shows the genetic difference of Mediterranean, Caucasian and Turkmenistan figs. If you like a shortcut, then magnify this first link

Genetic structure and differentiation in cultivated fig (Ficus carica L.)

This is the full article

Looks like a great article. It will take some time to absorb it.

Thanks for sharing the info Sal. I find fig breeding and genetic fascinating.

Heterozygous, I haven't heard that in a while! I enjoyed the article very much.

Example R is Dominant, r is recessive = Rr. A lot of polymorphic "yadedaida"... But I got the gist of it. A little long so I didn't get to the end. But I enjoyed the first paragraph.

You can go down directly to  RESULTS  and read about the similarities of the common figs we discuss about in this Forum

That is the genetic tree for the USDA Collection at UC Davis.

Yup Jon that Chart is in 1 of your zillion links .
I always was curious about the Gazir fig in relation to Madeira on that chart.

You're right Martin.

This year I will know how closely related these fig are

...Deanna, Orphan and UCR 278-128 -- Only Orphan fruited last year.  It was good.

....Niore de Caromb and Mission -- both fruited last year.  MSN ripen before NdC - both were good

...Beall and Early Violet - my Beall figs are huge, expect EV figs this year.

...Genoa White and Harvey Adriatic -- hoping to compare these this year!

...Brunswick, Rattlesnake Island, Capitola Long and Red Italian - Have tasted Brunswick--excellent and rich tasting.

...Monstrueuse, Paradiso, Ischia Green--My Monst figs soured on the tree last year.  Paradiso did too!  IG did not!

....Vista, Beers Black, and Violet de Bordeaux--have all 3 growing side by side, time will tell!

...Bourjassotte Grise and Violet Sepor--My BG is in the ground.  VS is not but grew 3' last year!

Can't find Janice on the sheet.  I know its a sport of Kadota.  I got a couple of Janice trees coming.  They should fruit this year.  My Kadota is about 5 years old...a pretty large tree.  The figs are excellent tasting.  I only expect the same from my Janice trees.  BUT Excel was richer in flavor and taste than Kadota.  If you want an excellent tasting fig, get Excel.  Excel at UCD are out of this freaky world good too!!!!  You can't go wrong with either a Kadota or Excel.

Yes Dennis keep us informed when you get the time down the road.
This is 1 part reason but not just because why i get rid of fig plants as many taste not exactly alike but similar enough and with just a garage there is no need for them on a personal level to make room for the best of the best as i sort them out and taste them for my personal palate.

Come to the Dark side Dennis as iv'e read your leaning but just need a little nudge.
All in Fun as always. ; )
