Genovese AF

I just lost one of my prized fig tree Genovese AF. I started my fig shuffle today and saw the trunk was
split in half.  Anybody know what would cause that?

Vito

Can you get a picture to post?

Vito, from what i read in past but do not recall to a tee the exact process - darn i cant remember diddly squat anymore.

fig trees in cold regions late in season create a form of protection in its limbs as the water moves out other things take place sort of a anti freeze type barrier in the limbs interior not sure if its a starch or sugar but there is a name for it other than so called anti freeze i use for a lack of better term.

If to much water is left when cold temps arrive it will slowly expand outwards overtime and crack and or split limbs during dormancy.

Vito, sorry to hear that.
I lost mine too (a different reason).
I remember that there was a question about it either being the black or white cultivar.
The good news is that I know one FF member (FL) that still has a (slow growing) one from that batch.

what does Genovese AF look like? i know of Genovese Nero and Bianco.. but have not heard of Genovese AF before...

Vito, does all the wood look dead?  There may be a way to save it.  Post some close up photos and maybe we can help.  In the meantime, don't make the split any worse by carrying it around.

Likely Genovese AF denotes it is from "Adriano Feirera". Likely I misspelled Adriano last name. My apologies.

cool. i guess that means either Genovese Nero or Bianco. hope my GN put on the figs this year.

Martin,I never heard of that but it sure does make sense.  I gave them all a good watering before I put them away.

@George, your memory astounds me! :)

@Rcantor, Yes, all the wood is dead.  It was a single trunk and split right at the bottom.  Sorry, no photo right now.

@ Pete it was a big black fig.

Thanks to everyone for responding.

Vito
