Genovese Nero

this pix is couple of weeks old.. i think. it's growing rather well at this point and has few figs on that are of a good size.

one thing i noticed is pink pigment in the eye. it looks as if the eye is big and i can see inside or something. i hope that's not the case. heard lot of things about this fig and can't wait. hopefully the rain will stop when the figs start to swell.

Hey Pete, Can you post a picture of a leaf of your Genovese Nero.

art, i'll try to get some pix of leaf later today.

Looking forward to seeing your fruit ripen, hope it handles your weather.  I have a few young plants of these and they're a strong grower.

Looks great, Pete. Please keep us updated.

i hope so too. Paradiso Gene was amazing fig late spring last yr. then with rain, the whole main crop failed in fall. eye was too big. with rain, they more or less blew up. i hope Genovese Nero will have less of an issue.

It looks great Pete but every time I hear about the Nero variety I can't help but think of the TyTy video!

when i first started looking for figs, TyTy came up on all the searches. so i went to their site. my first impression was that they might be growing something other than figs. something green and something that looks very much like japanese maple.. and they seem to use their products.. heavily... when producting their magical videos.

so i was out grilling for the 4th of july.. the sun was shining and i decided to take some pix.

here they are. for whatever reason, i only had canadian quarter in the pocket. the figs have not started to swell. i'm thinking maybe one more month. i remember reading adriano saying that you can eat Genovese Nero with a spoon.

my hands were little shaky after 4 bottles of honey brown.

Pete,

There are other leaf patterns for the GN.
Can you please take pictures of each and post? Just the leaves please.

My tree is doing nothing this year.  Light green leaves and no figs, little growth.

rafed, i'll be grilling out again tomorrow for the guests. i'll take some more pix. i think they are more or less uniform. i heard there are different GN going around. this one is from a old forum member who collected this from adriano before he stopped trading figs.

Could be Pete.
Mine are direct too so that's why I want to compare.

I have two different strains that are the same. I'm confident about mine.

rafed,

this is pix of GN i took when it came to me last yr. leaf shape is totally different. and this is one that i see in some of the other threads.

Pete,

These are pictures from two GN trees. A long story behind them but the leaves are the same.
One was direct from Adriano. The 2nd was direct from Adriano but sent to another member who in turn sent me cuttings off.

Long story, I was there live and in person when the cuttings were being taken. One was a little plant.

I have no doubt I have the real deal.

now i have to go outside to look at my tree.. lol

so with 20 oz cup full of diet pepsi (wild cherry with splash of grand marnier) in my one hand, i took these photos.. it's only 11 o'clock and i'm sure neighbors were not wondering what is that crazy korean doing again at middle of the night.

here is the interesting thing. all the leaves with less lobes are from one sucker that i'm saving for barry.

most of the leaves on the older main trunk has multi lobe leaves like my previous post.

Now we're talking.
Because the pictures on post 15 were way off.
Drinking dark beer again?

yupe brown goodies. and listen to satchmo..

Pete,
I bought two cuttings of this fig on ebay this year, and they are alive and well.  I am curious to see when yours ripen and if they look like Adriano's pic when they do.  Please post some pics once they start to swell and darken up.  Also let me know if the eye is indeed open, and how suscesptible it may be to spoilage.

Thanks for the pics you have already posted, really nice looking fig!

cal,

among the figs i rooted last yr, Genovese Nero is most productive with good size figs. it has good number of figs on and i'm hoping to test enough to get some idea as to what it will be like down the road. i'll definitely post pix of ripen fig.

hey, pete. it would be really nice if you issued a taste  report.

looks like i'll keep adding trees.

susie

I'll piggyback on your thread, Pete.  I have a few GN going and one was started as a graft on a potted 5 gallon tree I bought.  While I was vacationing in Nicaragua my dad (going on 89 and tells me I'm crazy) took care of my figs and picked this ripe fruit and put it in the refrigerator for me until I got back.  It was pretty good.  I'm sure it will be better as the trees age.  My cuttings were purchased from Robert who acquired his as a gift from Rafed, if I remember correctly.

wow harvey. that thing looks amazing. just going by current size before swelling, it's gonna be a big 'un. and I noticed that first yr figs are usually on the smaller side.
