Genovese Nero

I started this cutting this spring. I know this guy will improve with age, but I can't wait to taste it.

It is still a day or 2 from ready

please give us a taste report.

If it's half as delicious as it looks, you've got a winner.

Back in the second week of July while I was in Nicaragua my dad picked the one fig from my new GN and put it in the refrigerator for me, saying he figured I'd chew him out if he ate it (he's almost 89 but we do some back and forth teasing).  It was much blacker than the one in this photo and it was great tasting, much better than I expected for such a small tree.  Look forward to it next year.

I've got a tree on the way, looking forward to this one once my tree starts to produce. I think you are in for a real treat with yours

Between Cal's picture and Harvey's description, I'm thinking this one is going on my wish list.  Thanks for sharing.  =)

Here is a pic of the final product. Genovese is on the top, and Papa John is on the bottom. The Genovese Nero was very jammy with a good flavor but lacked a little sweetness (probably because it came from a first year tree). The papa john is very good, and is my wife's favorite fig far and away.

where oh where does everyone find these figs I never hear of?

I learned of Genovese Nero at adriano's website, adriano's world of figs...

Thanks for sharing the pics and descriptions, Cal.  They look like great figs.

Looks like a keeper Cal..........

Soni,
I don't know where everyone hears about them but when I joined I took several days going through Jon's varietal pages letter by letter and taking notes. I then went to other sites, Adriano's being one of the first. There are a lot of links that still work on the links page of Encanto Farms. After that I google and bing to see sites around the world.

I am also a fly on the wall in a couple of other forums just to see if anything interesting pops up.

I am a big fan of the "oldies" as well and am excited to get some things from Richard Watts this winter. Does anyone know if his Roma 320 equals the Roma Nera in the varietals page?

Brian,
I think it is a keeper, the skin was soft as advertised, and the jammy consistency was spot on.

I am looking to trade for a black Madeira or a ronde de Bordeaux if any one is interested.

Jules,
Nice to hear from you. I will always share pics and opinions interesting varieties, it's what makes this forum so great.

Soni-
You must know the answer to your own question as your collection has some really rare figs.  Where did you find all of yours?
