Genovese Nero

I had made a large air layer from my tree last year and gave it to a friend in the South. He said that it produced dark and tasty figs with a bit of crunch. I guess it fits the description of a GN.

Good to know this.

I will remove the fruit in a couple hours and post.

So close. Yet it feels like a million miles away.
I had a super ripe Genovese hanging on the tree. I went to the post office and came back and it is gone!

Once I finish typing this frustrating thread I am going out to buy a better pellet rifle. PETA can kiss my A$$.

It's your own fault........you kept talking about it so I drove up there, waited for you to leave and nabbed it....

seriously though I would go on a warpath.  I once had an armadillo tear up an entire row of 13 newly planted blueberry bushes, set them back a full year.  That day I swore an oath to exterminate them and many a semi innocent dillo has paid for the sins of that dillo.

I feel your pain, Rafed. Last week my first GN of the season was snatched completely off the tree.  Yesterday, as I previously reported, I had another that was expected to be ready today or tomorrow and several others that were getting close.  I covered them all with footies (small nylon socks).  I just came back from the orchard and it was also gone with the footie and small fragments of the GN laying 4' away.  Dang!!!

Very frustrating, Harvey.
But, I only blame myself, I let my guard down. I should have known better.

That sucks to hear. It would be game on if my figs were getting ripped from my trees.

I think tomorrow I'm going to buy a trap and try to trap whatever is getting these figs.  I might also wrap some figs up with window screen material.  There are other figs that I've been watching that have been left alone but whatever it is sure seems to like Genovese Nero!

I can trap, catch, chase away, scare, just about anything but the armadillos seem to know exactly when to tear everything up. No traps work and I can not stay up all night, they seem to know that.

Art, picked this one  a few minutes ago. Still no berry taste and the inside certainly doesn't match yours. Just thought I would share it

Mike,

I had a big question mark on mine and rightfully so because of the way it looked.
I was  told by a few theirs did the same as mine did at one time or another. I even asked another friends who I sent a large air layer of and he said the figs were large and dark.

Yours however, I am 99.9% certain you have the real deal. Has the looks and size of a Genovese.
The leaves I've seen were very close to one.

As for the taste, I think it may have to do with its' age.

BTW,
Is this the breba? looks like the breba to me. The main crop is smaller.

Rafed, do you have any idea what the flavor is suppose to be like? Berry or melon/honey like?

All of mine have been main crop. No breba this year on the tree.

Mike,

Been around the "real" deal at Adrianos a few times. I have seen it in different parts of the season. I have had several opportunities to try it from my trees, but the tree rats got to them before they are fully ripe first. I cant say for sure on the taste. Some say berries and some say other tastes.

I'm going by it's history as to how and who you got it and looks.
Taste wise I cannot answer, sorry.

I got cha

Mike, Here is what I wrote about my breba this year. I wrote that it had a melon taste.

Rafed,

This one didn't get dark. Due to the weather and under leaves. Still my best tasting fig.

Thanks, Art.

Took one out earlier.

What a beauty, and must be a Diva to change her appearance to mess with your minds

I picked 4-5 Genovese Nero today. A few of them were over-ripe as I had been gone since Thursday.  This one was very good, maybe a 9.  Sweet and very good flavor, maybe could use a bit more acidity.  Temperatures remain 5F-10F below normal for here.

Gorgeous fig Harvey. You guys are sure doing a great job making us drool over this one.

Thanks, Calvin.  I remembered I took another shot today in the field with my phone.  Sometimes just biting it results in a better presentation, LOL. :)

Harvey,

That's an amazing looking fig.  This thread has me intrigued.

The weather has been awesome here. These get a 12 rating. Still the best in yard.

Wow, good job.  About how many grams are yours?  I wonder what these typically run weight wise.  Mine are caprified, I believe.

Thanks for these pictures everyone, this is a great looking fig and I am glad we have more information about it this year.
