Getting cuttings from the USDA?

I was doing some web surfing, and I realize that some people here have obtained some samples from the germ repository at UC Davis. I remember looking the gov't repositories before (not necessarily for figs), and I thought I read that they don't like to send stuff to average Joe's. On the other hand, I found a portal for buying stuff, complete with shopping cart.

What's the deal??? Who gets to buy cuttings from the gov't, and who doesn't? How does it all work?

Can you please provide a link?

Here's a link to the portal I found. You have to register. That may be the thing, --or they review every order to make sure that only certain people and groups get cuttings.

But, yeah, they've got like 500 fig varieties. It looks like many of them you can just click the add to cart button.

Just search for "fig"

They decide to stop shipping to us "average Joes" this year.  They do review the orders, and sometimes just don't fill the order, or contact you.  I have had far better luck ordering apple and pear scionwood.

The way they worded their policy on fig cuttings doesn't make it clear that they don't offer them to the public.

Are you guys sure they don't sell to the public?

How much do they charge for apple and pear scionwood? For fig cuttings? I paid like $3 a stick last year from other sources for apple scionwood.

a) they don't charge

b) yes, we're sure they've stopped sending scions from Davis to the public.

They don't charge....

Now I think I know why they don't send anyone anything anymore.

Government and their dumb methods....what's the next thing they're gonna screw up? Healthcare? Oh... wait...

:D :D :D :D :D

I got an email last week denying my request from over a year ago. Oh well...

cheapnewb- They do not charge for apple or pear scionwood.  This year, they are not shipping out pear scionwood due to a virus problem.
