Gina's Humble Harvest

After seeing all the yummy fig harvest photos the past few days, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. :)

They are not too bad. Better than the last batch I got from TJ's. More flavor. But pale in comparison to figs fresh picked. The label says 'packed 8/17' which is already a week ago.

Cut em in half, dip em in butter, and put em on the BBQ!!  Delish!!
Suzi

Cut em up use them in fig bread pudding.  Stuff with goat cheese and walnut or almond, put em on the grill

They are OK for a fig fix. :)

I think I'll do what I did with the other batch - eat some more 'fresh', then dehydrate the rest to intensify the flavor. That actually works pretty well.

Even snails taste better with butter. And cheese with nuts helps almost anything. ;)

I grilled a fig for the first time, yes it really does intensify the flavor and of course you can add other flavors to it.

quarter the figs, but not all the way through. stuff them with goganzola, and wrap them with shaved proscuitto. bake it in oven.. then drizzle with honey.

I got some figs from TJ's, too.  They were so far from ripe I threw them out.  No flavor at all.

Gina, I almost bought some just 2 hours ago at out local international market. They had Black mission and Brown Turkey figs there but I bought the lychees instead. Why? Because I have 1 fulll case of Strawberry fig jam, 1 full case of Fig Berry jam, 1 full case of Fig Chutney, I full case of FROG Jam, and 1 full case of Vanilla Fig Jam.

Here's a recipe I got last year at UCD.....it's close to Pete's recipe:

Grilled Figs

1. Using a knife, cut a triangle in the side and remove some pulp
2. Insert some feta cheese
3. Wrap the fig with a piece of procuttito
4. Take a sprig of rosemary and use it to hold the ham on the fig
5. Grill the figs until the ham is crispy and the cheese bubbles
6. Remove from the grill, Let them rest 10mins and eat.

enjoy!

Dennis, you had me going there with frog jam, until I googled it.

Same here. I thought it an earthy regional something or other.

I'm thinking some day it would be fun to make something like Figs Foster in the tradition of Bananas Foster.... sauteing figs in butter and brown sugar, flaming with a warm liquer, and serving over good vanilla ice cream. yum!

Wow, what a coincidence!  I also got those black missions!

For my palate, they aren't so great--mostly very sweet with a lite mission fig profile.  And if you got one that wasn't ripe, it's not near as pleasantly vegetal and berry tart-sweet as my own trees.  More like a nasty cucumber.  Texture of the good ones are pretty good, but I think picked off the tree is better, Black Mission or Petite Negri.

But as a fig fix?  Especially in light of the fact that I have such a tiny ripening window of my own?  Can't complain.
