Gino's fig Pixes

Here is fruits from my 5 yrs old Gino.
Other years it had larger fruits but this year with the severe drought they are smaller.
Compared to last year when they did not have the right color pigment, and were earthy purple, look at them this year in a warmer Sommer.
The eye is not red anymore it is purple blue.
The tree is like allwayes, with bluish green leaves like no other fig,I know.
yOU CAN SEE THE NORMAL GREEN ON THE FIG NEARBY(iTALIAN hONEY)

This tree makes fruits almost as good as Violette de Bordeaux every year .
Of course I am not saying not to have a Violette de Bordeaux, but when Violette has a bad year with fruits splitting all the way and souring, then one has Gino to enjoy year after year.
Sometimes in very good dry years Violette de Bordeaux has the best tasting figs in the world,so being without one is not good for a fruit lover who like to have best.

The VdB fig is one of my best figs!
Though, it took it a while to mature to its good standards...

With the fruit looking so pretty and the plant mentioned as having good cold hardiness, Gino has a lot going for it (except waiting 5 years.. can't check the bank account for this balance...).

The Gino fig sounds like a winner and still on my list but need to thin out some plants first in a season or two.
Interesting my Edible Landscaping Violet Bordeaux 4 full seasons tasted best depsite 7th wettest and warmest season on record of 115 years.
Taste was best in yard and no splitting in recent rains during ripening.
Im sure Gino would be an excellent type growing here.
I wonder what type this fig actually is.

My Violette de Bordeaux was best,in 2007,worse in 2008,average in 2009,and possible best again in 2010,judging how well most of my figs are doing this Sommer.
Intresting enough,Aubique Petite, that ,I got from Dr Leon Deprest,is inground too ,same age,and that looks almost identical to Violette de Bordeau(EL),allready starting geting ripe fruits to date.
More Intresting is that Aubique Petite have 2 hours less sun in the spot is in ,compared to Violette de Bordeaux EL.
Aubique Petite originates at Pierre Baud ,France.
I say almost Identical, because they are not Identical.
Talk about trying to guess what a fig is when looking at it!!!!

off topic a bit, Martin.
One of my currently three best figs is Sal EL, mostly for early ripening criteria but  taste too. I always wonder what EL stood for but never asked even though I knew about Edible Landscaping. Your post just flashed it that it has to be Sal from Edible Landscaping.

Akram:This fig have 200 figs now in the 5th year.
When I got it in trade as a rooted cutting against Hardy Chicago, from Bill Class,in 2005,it gave me a handfull of fruits the same year.

Herman, Yes, My VDB that I received from Rolling River{Labeled Negronne} is much earlier and way more productive than VDB from Edible Landscaping.I posted this observation last year or two years ago. The difference is Amazing. My Petite Abique from Leon and my VDB from RR are growing side by side and I have been eating more than a dozen ripe figs already. My petite abique fruits are just starting to change color and swell.

Herman2 -- I have my GINO planted in-ground this spring. Its in its 2nd season here and it is doing very well. Just a question, do you still need to protect your 5 year old GINO during winter ? The Gino figs were fabulous tasting last year.

I protected it last year, with a plastic tarp over ,only.
This is because I had one,and the tree is only 4 foot by 5 foot,so,that is why.
Next year I am going to leave it open without protection.
No Damage in the Spring.

That is a very interesting leaf color on your tree H2.

Gino's is a great tasting fig that does real well in my area. In my yard, Gino's "taste" profile is more similar to Sal's El and Dark Portuguese than it is to VdB El. I give an edge to Gino's for growing in my particular climate. However, these are all keeper figs for me.

@H2  --  thanks for the info. Will do likewise as it took off with plentiful green wood. Have spreading tendency here.

@Dan  --  Good info that it did well in your area. It will be good for my brother  in Malaysia.

Dan:Yes,you can see it is bluish, and not like the fig in the left and right of it.
By the way : As you look at the pix,to the right is :Italian Honey
To the left is:English Brown Turkey.
Positively different than Marseilles vs Black ,HC,Unknown #11,as they do not have bluish leaves.

H2,

I have no doubt too that Gino is its own fig. The others are similar in taste, but Gino's is a bit different.....your blue/green leaves prove it.  Just got inside from cutting the grass and I ate some figs from my Unknown #11 (HC, Dark Port, and Sal's too) as I passed under the trees.  #11 is another great tasting fig that does real well in my yard. This year they are a bit smaller than Gino's fig.
