Globe and Mail Essay about Growing a Fig Tree in Toronto's Little Italy

What a sweet story.

Vivian

I enjoyed this article very very much, I feel the same sentiment as this old grandfather, he and I share a very similar life.   Thanks for posting. Ciao

Matt_from_Pittsburgh thanks for posting the story.
It was nice to read , i sure one day that tree will be special to his son .
Perhaps some of our kids or grandkids will have stories dear to them stored in there memory about things we did in seasons that will be of long ago with the passage of time.

Very nice story.
Being new to fig growing, I was surprised that he only buried it 4 inches deep in Toronto. At that depth it would be frozen for most of the winter. Does any one in the forum from southern Ontario  bury thier figs for the winter? How deep? I am wondering because once I get some rooted figlets from my trees I plan on trying to experiment with outdoor overwintering and am wondering how much protection do they need? How deep to bury? how much  wrapping? etc.
thanks
Grant
