This is a ripe GM172 I picked the other day. This is a 3 year old tree in a 10 gallon pot and this is the first ripe fig we have had off of it. Last year it had a few fruits but they all dropped. It still has about 15 figs left on it. This fig was very good, a unique flavor compared to some of the others I have had. I think its a keeper. Thanks for looking.      

Looks a lot like Black Madeira.

Next time let them hang until they're completely loose and very soft.  They should taste even better.  You might have to protect them from critters.  :)

Thanks Jon and Art- that's what I thought when I first saw the outside. My black Madeira is still small so I haven't had a chance to taste that to be able to compare.
Thanks Bob, I will try with one of the next ones. We have had intermittent downpours lately so I have had to pick some stuff sooner than I wanted to.

Any tasters besides Zach? Does anyone know how it holds up in the deep southeast?

Looking forward to mine fruiting next year!

I am growing this variety now and it is one of the first to start putting on a main crop.  I'm looking forward to these later in the season.  Is anyone growing this one and have any impressions to share regarding taste, cold hardiness, etc? I'm thinking about planting it in the ground here in zone 7a.

I tasted a fig off of Zach's tree last summer along with figs from several other varieties.  It was one of my favorite figs of the day but I can't recall exactly what the taste was like or what flavor group it would fit into.  I do remember the flavor as being very unique, certainly unlike the taste of other figs in my collection.  Let's compare notes on this variety.

Gorgi, if you are out there please chime in as well.  Any back-story on this fig or your impressions that you can share?  It was found in Malta, correct?

Certainly looks like a winner, did the pictured fig get an early start or was it started same as any other shuffled fig? To be clear, I realize that is an old post but end of August is early for a fig which may be similar to Black Mad.

Zach doesn't have a greenhouse but he shuffles his figs on/off an asphalt driveway which holds some heat.  His figs seem to get a slightly earlier start than mine but maybe it has more to do with climate than anything.  I do not think this is a long-season fig like Col de Dame or Black Madeira - probably more like a mid-season fig.

Fig looks a whole lot like one I got from another member but labeled something else.
