Golden Celeste

I had this lone fig on what I think is a Golden Celeste.  Last year I remember I had two trees marked Golden Celeste but one was more of a bronze color.  I'm pretty sure I did not mess up the labels on those and the data base shows fig interiors that can vary from light to dark.  One of the leaf patterns looks right.  Now that I look at the pictures, it looks like it was starting to turn a bronze color in some areas.

Looks good.  What did it taste like?

Champagne?

My [E: LSU] Golden Celeste fruit are more 'longish' in shape.
As for taste; just slightly above average (nothing spectacular).

(Ooops; I need to adjust my camera date-settings too!)

Oh, I just remembered that there is yet another Golden Celeste from UCDavis.
It is 'roundish' in shape with a hint of dark coloring on the skin.
This is most probably what you have.

The one I showed in my above post originaled from LSU.

This cutting did come from UCD.  I probably would have turned darker if I left it on longer.  It looks like it was starting to turn color.

It was mildly sweet and watery like a melon.

Tom,
Thanks for posting pictures and commentary.

The "Golden Celeste" in the opening post looks like the UCD Golden Celeste... I acquired a plant today at the Fall fig meeting in NJ.

The LSU Golden Celeste aka Champagne is an extremely sweet fig with a rich taste, if you let them ripen until they develop sugar spots (brown spots).
I hope this fig's name doesn't cause confusion.

So Pete you are saying the figs in post #3 are LSU Golden Celeste and are the same as LSU Champagne.  Is that correct.

thanks
goss

Rather recently, LSU released 3 figs

O'Rourke -  previously an Improved Celeste strain.
Champagne -  previously a Golden Celeste strain.
and
Tiger - previously a Giant Celeste strain.

Here is how these 3 new figs are defined by LSU:

My GC is more longish, like a tear drop. They have a Celeste like flavor, but not a strong. They were very good this year, and larger than usual.

Goss,
Gorgi's post #9 is the answer to your Question.
LSU created Golden Celeste strains, the one that was officially released was named Champagne.

Also the posts from LSU Field Day with lots of pictures and comments from forum members that attended.

O.K. so after reading all this info I should continue calling my Golden Celeste (Golden Celeste) and not believe it is Champagne.  Thanks for all the info folks.

I think that is best to qualify the GC fig show in post #1 as: "(UCD) Golden Celeste".
I do have a small plant like it, but has not fruited yet.

My (LSU) Golden Celeste shown in post #3, seems to match the LSU definition of the Champagne fig.

@goss: What is the source of your GC; LSU or UCD?

Some more confusion here...

This is how DFIC 161 (UCD) Golden Celeste is defined:

Note that there is mention of both TAMU (McEachern) and LSU (O'Rourke) in its history:

Source History

This is a reliable variant, year after yr, it produces a good crop. Tree came from Jon.

George,
Per all the old (including some of yours) and newer documented posts, there are several different cultivars in circulation of the LSU figs. The cultivar that was donated may not have been the cultivar that was designated as "Golden Celeste" by the LSU breeders, but one of the "inferior" cultivars that were eventually bulldozed.

Paully22,
Are you referring to the LSU Golden Celeste or the UCD Golden Celeste?

As per Jon's description "tear drop shape" & that would be LSU. Nice tree U got.

Paully22,
Thanks for the reply.
The pictured tree (picture taken by "Brakishfigger") above in my previous post #11, is the LSU orchard tree in Louisiana.

The picture below is my tree in its 5 gallon bucket.

I tasted many (regular) Celeste figs. Invariably, they all tasted very sweet.

Compared to regular Celeste(s), my (LSU) Golden Celeste tasted inferior.

Not so with my (LSU) Improved Celeste; much more more superior sweet taste!

Thanks Pete for the photos.

Best,
Tam

My Champagne fig matches Pete's photo.  Mine has a red center and is sweet but not as sweet as Celeste.  The figs on my tree are long just like Improved Celeste but is a yellow color in my climate.

Mine is young and still small.  It has it's first fig on it now.  Hopefully it will ripen soon and I can tell more then.  Right now I would say it looks more like the UCD variety than the Champagne type.  I just received the plant from a neighbor who is a member here he may comment if he is following this.   It is probably to early to call it either one yet so I think I will just continue with I don't know.

thanks
goss

Goss,

Your's is a 2012 Cuttings from USDA UC Davis

Phil

Well Well how about that I got it right just by looking.  Thanks for chiming in Phil I am so proud of myself I may take a few just to strut.
