Good time to air layer

I know this has been discussed a lot, I did a search and found lots of other threads and I just don't have the time to spend hours reading them, so please....

My  in ground LSU Purple started to leaf out about  week or so ago.  I would like to air layer the top 2 ft and a sucker that is about 4 ft long.  When would be a good time?  I would like to plant them in the ground when they are ready  - maybe too ambitious?  I will also give 1 or 2 as potted gifts.

2 days ago it went down to 21!!!!!!!!  and had a little damage to the leaves.  I checked the 10 day forecast and the lows will be in the low 40's.  That brings us 2 days before the official last frost date so I am thinking frost won't be an issue since the 10th day of the forecast the low will be 57!

I am not worried about fig production on the top branch since I couldn't reach them anyway lol.

Also, there are some brabas forming, last year the breba was so-so, if I nip them off will I get main crop that much sooner and potentially more compared to leaving the breba on?

Thanks!

Wait till you have some good new growth on the part you want to air-layer. The photosynthesis in the leaves above the rooting point it what drive the rooting process.
