got buzzed by a bird..

there are 4-5 main crop Kathleen's Black figs nicely turned to black. not fully ripen.. i went out to check on them this morning and get buzzed by a bird that was flying in for them.

and the nerve of these birds.. they are sitting on the neighbor's fence looking at me and the figs. i have a feeling, i won't be tasting much of those figs.

The birds have found my yard this year. Last year I don't think I lost one fig to birds. Now I'm seeing lots with holes pecked in them.

Pete,

This might help:

But not probably on eBay unless you keep distracting the birds untill they arrive.

might try that organza bag thing later... won't have time till this sunday to try anything new.. sigh. hope they leave me some for sunday snack.

I purchased those organza bags back during the winter...I'm having very good success with them against the birds, they just don't seem to want to peck at those bags...I noticed they also keep small insects away from the figs during the vulnerable ripening cycle, especially when the eye of the fig would give easy access to them...the organza material is woven with a very tight mesh...they are also reusable throughout the entire season. (maybe even next year too).

I put those bags on some of my figs, so far so good Birds are wicked this year

Wrap a whole section of the NYT around that part of the tree.  Hide some aluminum metal screen between the layers.  Don't let the birds win or they'll become even more aggressive.  Use 1/4 x 1/2 hardware cloth.  Fight!

I've used mine for 2 seasons now - at the end of the season I hand wash them all and they are ready to go for next season.
They have kept out the ants also!

Pete, a couple weeks ago I noticed a few pea sized figs on my KB that I got from you!  I pinched the terminal once back in early June to encourage branching and perhaps that triggered it.  They won't ripen this year but it suggests that with pinching next year I should be eating some KB figs!

I'm having a terrible problem with the birds this year too.  Especially two blue birds.  They are eating the figs like crazy.  I will have to stop at Party City and get some of the organza bags. I tied strips of foil paper on some of the branches thinking it would scare the birds but it didn't.
