Got figs?

Hello everyone! I've been pretty busy traveling and working this month. Had a few figs last week from my Florea. I didn't have time to take any pictures. The wife and I just ate them. I went to San Diego on business for a week. I stopped by and said hello to Jon. Yes, I bought some of his trees. I truly love San Diego and trying to convince my wife to move there now that we are empty nesters. But she keep saying NO. Oh well!

I have not had any time to take care of my trees. My son watered some while I was away. My irrigation system is doing a great job. I've been working 14hr days lately and many of my figs need to be repotted. I should be getting some time off soon. When I do, I have a lot of work to do......wack weeds, repot trees, trim trees, and paint. Today, I worked and just finished a nap. So, I went out and snapped a pics of my container fig garden. I got 7 areas. Here are a few of them.....

Enjoy these pics!

Here are my persimmons and Pakistan Mulberry

I did not add pictures from the south west corner of my fig garden. In that area are 67 large SWP trees. And I did not show the 72 figs growing in my orchard. Plus I got some rooted cuttings to pot up not shown above. Hey Jon, I might have more fig trees than you! HA! Go figure!

How bout those figs!!!!!!

Holy!

Cow!

How bout ALL those figs!!!

Wow! Showing my hubby, he can't tell me I have too many now! Thanks Dennis for sharing.

If there was a bowing icon it would be used now!

Better plan on leaving the plants behind if you do move.
They can get taken away at the inspection stations at the state line by the California AG Inspectors.

They usually stop movers looking for that stuff.

When I used to cross into California I had to show them my paperwork to prove what I was carrying.

Rafed, moving to CA ain't gonna happen. I'm retired Air Force. I'm looking for a new place to retire that's military retiree friendly. Both my family and my wife's family live 45 minutes away. My parents passed away years ago. My wife's mother is still alive and Jackie needs to be close by so, I understand. But.......

At the moment my wife wants a new car. So, I will buy her one this December. She backed into my pickup coming out of the driveway a month a go. Although, I was mad.....I did not say thing.....I'm gonna play my "quite" card for a while. I'm gonna buy her the car she wants and then look for some land in Hilton Head, South Carolina. I'm taking the family there before my next California trip.

I do have a lot of fig trees. Not to mention, Paw Paws, Pomegrantes and Grapes. Wherever I go, my plants go. I plan on retiring from my corporate job in 9 years or less....if its God's will.

That's a lot of hard work, Dennis.  I hope they reward you with lots of figs.

Thats a serious fig farmer.

Look'in fabulous !!!! What a wonderful collection. If you ever need help watering cause your out of town, just let me know!! I promise all your figs will have the same number of branches they did when you left!

That is a lot of trees and I thought I was obsessed. Boy I can show my wife something now, it's not me. Snaglepus they look great and I would be willing to help too but I couldn't make the promise that Gloria did. Just being honest.

Now that is what I call COMMITMENT!
So let me get this right, you went to San Diego and bought MORE fig trees?  Good to see you're putting the new deck to good use.  Definitely need to find a larger place for all them figs, for sure.  Mahalo for sharing, Dennis.

I think I have the same fig sickness, just less fever.

Looks great Dennis. I will also show these pictures to my wife to help the cause
Cheers

You need help

Very impressive!!!

Ha! you guys are funny! The figs are starting to ripen. Hardy Chicago figs are ripening now. The birds got a few already.

Dennis, just curious, how MANY pots do you have?

How long does it take to water all the pots not on the irrigation system.

How many tons of soil?

No need to worry about competition from me!

Wow.  Now nobody can say I have a "lot!"

Tony, i'm not sure exactly how many I have. Last week, the appliance man came to fix the dryer. He looked outside and was amazed. He asked if I could show him around. I did and he just laughed and said, "what an investment".

As for soil, I get a half a pallet of UPM and a half a pallet of Pete's mix. I also make a mix of peat moss, Cow, mushrrom, perlite, and pine bark fines. I'm experimeting with making my own cheap mix next year using home-made compost, top soil and sand. I found top soil for $6 bucks a cu yd. I haven't check sand prices. I'm getting ready to buy a leaf chipper and compost tumbler this month. The plan is to start mixing the 3 in December and store it out back until I need it. The mix sounds heavy and it is. I'm converting all pots to self watering. Figs grow so much better in self watering pots.

wow, lovely thread.
So much to learn and see...

Dennis regarding the Self-Watering pots: I would worry about ONE thing. To my knowledge, unless you use Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water, you are going to have salt build ups and which will poison the plants eventually.
What do you think...am I wrong?
I read this many head ago on a Garden Magazine...can't even remember....to quote directly from it.

Distilled water should never be used regularly  on plants.
It is too aggressive and caustic, locks up nutrients as well.

Personally not a fan of SWP,
fruit produces is blander in taste,
too much access to water during fruiting.

Great for growing tall lanky fig trees for cuttings though.

Nice collection of trees there.

Amazing fig collection.
But I got ask; what are you going to do with all those figs? (my wife keeps asking me that and I don't have anywhere near as many).

I'm not worried about salt build up.  Out of all my trees in pots, those in SWPs LOOK the healthiest.  They do not get much fertilizer.  I'm in the process of experimenting with a fertilizer pill to feed my figs.  When I do give those in SWPs liquid fertilizer, the results is amazing.  I pinch my trees every week....they grow that fast!  The only lanky trees I have are those NOT in SWPs--no joke!  If your figs are bland tasting, check you soil composition.  I feed my figs organic swamp tea every week.  Google it!  It is organic all the way.

What do I do with all the figs?  Every morning before the birds are up, I pick the ripest ones and bring them to work.  On Fridays, I pick and take to sell at the market.  I sell out in less than an hour.  When I'm not at the market, I eat figs with the wife and I make jam.  LOTS OF JAM!   Locals here that know me, call and order the jam by the case.   I roast some with feta and ham.  I dry some.  I also sell figs to resturants in uptown Charlotte.

Sounds like you are doing a great job spreading the love!

Wow, Dennis - if you get rid of the grill you can fit in a few more :)
