graft 1st attempt

I expect to be getting some of the cuttings that our friend Jimmy Chao offered from his Bronx Blondie.  I'm thinking about trying to graft a couple to a cherry tree that I cut WAY back a couple years ago.  Can anyone offer advise on:
1. Which type of draft would be best?  I'd love to slit the  bark a couple feet off the ground and graft there but I could do it higher up where I cut it back.
2.  Is it an Okay time of year to try a graft in south-central Ohio.
3.  Hints for success?  I've watched some you tube videos, but have never done anything like this.

All The Best to All, especially Jimmy for his generosity.

Forgive me if I'm not understanding but you know you have to graft a fig to a fig, right?  You can't graft a fig to a tree that produces cherries.

If you're thinking of grafting fig wood to the fig named Eve's Black Cherry then I apologize.

My newbie status reared its ignorant head. I see fruit cocktail trees being offered on the Internet that contain apples, pears, plumbs, etc. I assumed that my cherry tree root stock would accept a fig graft. Silly me. What will happen if I try? Will it not take or will it produce cherries that look like figs, lol.
Help, I'm in over my head.

Some things such as apricots and plums can be grafted together, but in general you have to graft like to like. In this case, fig to fig.
