Grafting

Always shied away from trying this - almost seems like dabbling in the dark arts. Is it alchemy, voodoo, magic? I've checked out a few threads, & it seems members have had mixed results, so at the very least it's definitely arcane.

Well, it's about time I gave it a try myself  - maybe during next year's growing season. Meantime, I need to build up a store of knowledge about this technique. So excuse my ignorance if this is a really daft question, but can I graft fig scion onto any established rooted stock, such as forsythia, for example? Or should I stick exclusively to fig on fig?

Fig to fig.
The success depends a lot on how clean and sharp are your tools. I would first choose a  grafting type and then discuss the specifics. It is quite easy to graft figs, good luck with this!

You need to keep in the same family for successful grafting. Pome fruit-apples,pears,quince. Stone fruit(prunus)-peach, nectarine, plum, apricot. Figs to figs. There is a ton of information to had on the web about grafting though. Have fun!

Shoot. I had hoped to transform my forsythia into a frankenfig with 6 different varieties growing on it. Oh well, thx anyway guys. And yeah, will let ya all know how I get on with this little side show.

Thanks for the link Luke (or should that be luke link?) - I'll be sure to check it out soon as.

Grasa has done alot of grafting of figs with pics in many topics. even root grafting which i thought was cool.

Thx for that Whisperer. I'll be sure to check Grasa'a threads as well.

Hmm, the first 2 replies appear to have got it wrong:

Any comments anyone?

These are all stone fruits, they were not wrong.

Good point Rob, but is almond a stone fruit?

Not 100% sure but I'm gonna say yes. It's close enough in the realm of stone fruits to graft in to there root stock.

Oops. Yes it is. Just 'googled' it. Apologies fellas, you were right after all. Still, interesting project, don't ya fink?

It is fun! I attempted several fig grafts this past spring and all failed. I tried cleft, chip and T Bud with no luck at all. I believe I went wrong by not completely covering the grafts and buds with film and they dried out before healing properly. On a positive note, I did try my first citrus TBud grafts this spring and all of them took! I've now got several more citrus on trifoliate root stock which I grew from seed from a local trifoliate tree in the woods behind my house. It was fun from start to finish! I've got several more root stocks I grew that will get grafted next spring. Have fun;)

Thanks, I will, but might be a bit too late this season. Maybe next year.

Are those deliberate typos Rob? If not, you might wanna edit to say 'where the two meet'.

Lol, not deliberate! Never even noticed till you pointed that out;)

So English not your strong point then? But yeah, I pick up those kinda errors fairly easily. Glad you saw the funny side tho. Some people take great exception to being corrected.

And you might have noticed liberal use of 'typos', etc., in my posts too. But since they're deliberate, I have a defence.

To make it more fun, not all related plants are neccesarily graft compatible...Japanese plums generally graft well onto European Plums, but not vice versa.

There are some weird intergeneric grafts that will work too.  I have a Shipova (Sorbus x Pyrus) grafted onto Aronia rootstock. That's just confusing.

Wow, I didn't take offense until your last smart a$$ post! $$ was deliberate;) I know its not your fault though because obviously your parents didn't raise you right. Where I come from, Mr. Knowitalls and smart mouths get whooped early and often. If not, they get whooped as adults by other respectful adults! One day, you will correct the wrong person at the wrong time and place and they will do what your parents should have long ago. Good luck!

Sorry if I offended any one other than Costas, it needed to be said! Youth these days.......ghees!

Youth? I'm flattered Rob, but I'm almost certainly old enough to be your dad.

The jibe about your English was intended to be just that - a jibe, a ribbin', a joke, a jape; no more, no less. If you read any of my other posts about 'the grammar police', you'd know what I was talking about - it's a running joke in some threads. Sorry you didn't get it.

And don't worry, it takes a lot more than that to offend me. Good effort tho. (That typo was also deliberate). But you could do a lot worse than to acquire a sense of humor. Try it. You'll live longer for it.

Costas,

It isn't a joke, it is rude.  If you are as old as you claim you really should know better.   If you had been taught manners as well as you were taught grammar,  we would not be having this discussion.

Wills - I use the term 'joke' very loosely. This one doesn't have a punchline. More of a leg-pull, a wind-up. Seems I succeeded rather too well.
