Grafting carifig scion into female tree

I have a big female fig tree in my yard that need fig wasps for pollination, each year the tree produce small number of fruits and many of the non pollinated small figs drop, since I don't have much space to grow a separate carifig tree , my question is can I graft a caprifig branch in my tree to increase the number of wasps nearby?

The basic answer to your question is yes. You can certainly graft caprifigs to female fig trees.  You need to be sure that your area has fig wasps though, or it wont do any good.  Remember, there is always an option of planting a different variety of fig in its place which consistently produces quality fruit in your climate regardless of caprification.

I don't appreciate the idea of replacing a 20+ years old fig tree, and I'm sure fig wasps do exist in my area and farmers do plant caprifig trees, my only issue is: since a caprifig tree has many cycles and produce 3 times each season, grafting a caprifig scion onto a female tree that has only one cycle of production per season does it work fine?

Where are you located?

You need to graft 3 caprifigs that produce early mid and late.

Richie: where would someone go to buy these three caprifig? I still dont know much about this so all info is appreciated!

And, is there a list of which caprifig can be used for which female cultivar?  For instance, for Zidi?

I have Capri Z, but everyone draws a blank about whether it will work with Zidi.

Blue - Any caudaceous caprifig (which Capri Z is) should work with Zidi.

There may be issues regarding pollination timing.

mamtoug,

Welcome to the forum.
Yes it makes a lot of sense to bud or graft your female tree with a Caprifig... That's what under similar circumstances farmers do in my region. .. and the ideal timing for that is drawing near.. by the end of current month or early March

On the question .. what Caprifig ??
It is advisable to look around and get a Caprifig from the same area.
On every major area, Nature guides the growth of Caducous (female) figs and Caprifigs to make sure they interact efficiently in their symbiotic relationships
This is to say that the female figs shall be receptive when the Caprifig ripens its Profichi crop.
Up northern California this apparently happens in July.. more or less around SF Bay area.
LA, San Diego etc... wasps with pollen come out of Profichis by the end of May/early June

Another new member / JuneBug ) recently introduced to the forum and from the Sonoma County area showed us a nice Caprifig sporting a sizable crop of winter Caprifigs (Mamme)..
If you live about the same area (?) it would be great - did you tell us where is your fig ??- I do not wish to be indiscreet!

Your female figtree does it produce any Spring figs ? Brebas ?

Bluemalibu,

In the same area all good Caprifigs with consistent records of production are potentially OK for all your female trees in the same area.
Only after many seasons experimenting you realize that Caprifig A is better than B in the same place
What went wrong with your Zidi ?.. What is Capri Z ?

I live in Tunisia and the tree variety is a middle eastern variety called "Sultani", figs ripen in early july and pollination should be in early june, Actually there is no problem finding the appropriate caprifig tree, anyway I will try cleft grafting caprifig scion in late february and wait 1 or 2 years to see the result. thanks!

Good!  So you live in a fig paradise.. Congratulations!
You do well with a cleft graft.
To be  safe , I would graft on the side of the tree's canopy facing the arc - NE/N/NW  thus avoiding a full southern exposure. The Profichi crop if through its ripening is exposed to direct radiation from the sun  >>35ÂșC - in May or June (spring heat waves) this may easily  destroy the full crop in full exposure.
A successful graft shall need assistance in its infancy -2nd/3rd year- i.e., needs Caprification.
Depending on the timing of the available fruit on the young tree,  you may bring in a few Profichi ripe figs from an established Caprifig and/or if in winter, ripe Mamme fruit will provide wasps (with eggs but no pollen) around 3rd week of March to fill the young Profichi on the grafted limbs.
Good luck

Hi mamtoug,
You can go and graft.

I'd rather have the caprifig rooting in one or two pots.
Is there free land around ... Are you in a town or in the countryside ? ... In the countryside, you may find a nearby wild spot to plant the caprifig ...
I would go both routes and see which one develops better.
For the time being, do you have free access to a caprifig ?
If so, when the time comes, go cut some branches with figs full of near to emerge wasps and hang them in your own fig tree (put them in a bottle of water for longer life) .
The wasps being released closer to your tree ... Pollination will be better.
I once saw a video, where farmers would sell those branches at the right timing. Does that occur in your area too ?
Good luck !
