Grantham's Royal = Dauphine ??

Are these 2 variants similar ?? From the appearance of my Grantham's Royal, it sure look like pictures of Dauphine. I have both variants but only Grantham's have fruited.

This past summer I made the same observation. The Grantham's I have came from Burnt Ridge.

I am pretty sure that Grantham's Royal is the same as the San Pedro Dauphine. The leaves, the fruit, and the timing of breba figs were parallel. The main crop of both varieties dropped their fruit.

Thanks Leon.
My Grantham's Royal came from Jon. Colour wise of the ripe Grantham's fig looks like Dauphine. The Dauphine(Adriano) I have should be bearing this coming season(3rd year). My Grantham R. is planted in-ground whilst my Dauphine is in a pot. I would put my Dauphine in-ground in late winter/early spring to have a better comparison on leaves.  I wished I had stayed with what intrigue me when I first observe my Granthams ripening last year & noted similarities to a ripe Dauphine picture send to me from France by Michael.

And remember Paully what Jason wrote in a previous thread:

"Since Paully beat me to it ;) I'll share this tidbit:
Grantham's Royal is supposedly a clone of Royal Vineyard at the Grantham family's home.  To boot, Royal Vineyard is also aka Drap D'Or. Drap d'Or ("drip of gold") seems to be a common term used for several figs, translated various ways in central European languages including Drop of Gold, Drip of Gold, Drop of Honey, etc.
So, I guess at minimum you could add Royal Vineyard and Drap D'or to your list. You may add the variations of Drap D'Or to your list as "possibles" as well. "

Try reading Condit's "Fig Varieties: A Monograph" (downloadable PDF from my website) and Malli's "FigLink 1110" (the genetic fingerprinting study of the UC Davis collection downloadable PDF somewhere on the Figs4Fun website).

Both show Dauphine and Drap d'Or (Royal Vineyard) as distinctly different San Pedro Varieties!  If Grantham's Royal is in fact Royal Vineyard, it is therefore NOT Dauphine.  Work by Malli this year may confirm this when released as several cultivars from collections in Washington State were "fingerprinted".

May Varietal Confusion be vanquished ;)

BUMP

Anyone have any feedback on this. I got news from my source that my Dauphine
may not be the "real" one. It has not given me any figs yet. Hence I am not able to
make any evaluation. What I would like to know is anyone has any more info on Granthams
Royal likeliness to Dauphine. Thanks.

I would be sourcing Dauphine cuttings to correct any possibilities that the feedback from my
source is true. Would appreciate if fig friends can PM me if you have real Dauphine cuttings for
trade or sale.

Paully,

I was emailing back and forth with Dany in Quebec as I was going to order a Dauphine from him but I noticed he also had one called Grise de Tarascon which is supposedly a syn. of Dauphine. I asked him about that and he said his Dauphine had amber flesh while the Grise de Tarascon has red flesh. He confirmed they are supposedly one in the same so he was going to check his source of the Dauphine. He only had one GdT left so I ordered one. No Dauphine in stock currently though.

Tyler

Thanks Tyler. I did check Dany's website earlier. Keep us posted on your GdT.

With regards to your wishlist variants except for Maltese Beauty, I think you can find the rest
in Ontario.

Paul just following up on my GdT.... the main crop figs this year are slowly turning purple then falling off still rock hard. It didn't develop any brebas this year since its small so hopefully next year. Looks like its a breba only fig without the wasp :(

Hi Tylerj,
Do you have more pics of different leaves ?
Your photo1 is not a leaf of a "dauphine" aka "Grise de Tarascon" .
Here a "Dauphine" , in a school, is ripening her figs ... To me those figs are brebas ... So on last year's wood. At least that's my feeling ... I don't see hints of a main crop showing up .
That Dauphine is not an heavy producer in Zone7 - but well, let's face it, that tree is not well cared ... but is in a good spot .

jdsfrance here are a couple more pics of the leaves. So you don't think what I bought from Brugmansia is actually Grise de Tarascon... aka Dauphine??
