Great Photos, Thanks for posting. The skin looks very thick, could this be because its a breba..??? I have a strawberry verte that looks similar, maybe they are related.

Armando, I can't say for sure. Last year I couldn't get the main crop to ripen before it got cold out. I have a handful of breba left on the tree. I'm going to let them ripen longer than the ones pictured. We'll see if it makes a difference. I will post more pictures in a few days.

Ira Condit had the following to say about Verdone (aka Adriatic) in "Fig Varieties: A Monograph" Hilgardia, 1955 p.408 (available as a downloadable PDF from my website, http://sites.google.com/site/kiwifruitsalad2 ): "The following account of Verdone is based on observations of commercial plantings and of individual trees over a long period, and of trees fruiting in the collection of varieties at Riverside since 1932. Trees vigorous, densely branched, with broad, spreading crown. (Plate 2.) (See also Condit, 1941a, fig. 15.) Terminal buds green. As already pointed out (Condit, 1947, p.103), leaves of Verdone trees appear a week or ten days before those of Sari Lop and may, therefore, be seriously injured by late frosts, while leaves of the latter escape injury. Leaves medium, decidedly glossy above, stiff in texture, mostly 5-lobed; upper sinuses deep, moderately broad, lower sinuses fairly shallow; base broadly subcordate to truncate; middle lobe spatulate, with upper margins coarsely crenate, lower margins entire; leaf mosaic fairly conspicuous, with occasional twigs having badly distorted and dwarfed leaves, as shown by Condit and Home (1933). (See also plate 13.) Breba crop very small, or none (crop of 1953 was unusually heavy as the result of frost damage to terminal buds and the resultant pushing out of lateral fruit buds); figs medium or above, oblique-pyriform, mostly with prominent neck, up to 3/4 inch long; stalk thick, sometimes swollen, up to 1/4 inch long; ribs narrow, inconspicuous; white flecks fairly numerous and prominent; eye medium, scales greenish, with scarious margins; skin thin, colored greenish violet by the underlying dark-violet meat; pulp dark strawberry; flavor rich; quality good. (Plates 7; 16, D.)" I haven't spoken to Grasa yet but it looks to me like her "Adriatic" may not be correctly identified! My "Adriatic" obtained as a cutting in 2001 has yet to produce a single Breba, has glossy upper sides of leaves, 5-lobed, base truncate, middle lobe spatulate, and FMV is conspicuous. Can you post a photo of the dominant leaf form of your "Grasa Adriatic"? Happy Growing, kiwibob, Seattle

Bob, the mother tree is in the Central/Capitol Hill area. they were cuttings from my boss. I loaded up a car trunk and top full and send them all over the country. He said it produces a lot of them. It is fun to know Art has some brebas... I have a couple also, but far to be ripe.

Nice looking figs Art. Leaving them on the tree longer sounds like a good idea. Let us know if it makes a difference.

They look delicious...and large! Thanks for sharing! Is Grasa Adriatic a San Pedro variety?

I agree with Herman! All of your posted photos of "Grasa Adriatic" are of Desert King. Desert King is a San Pedro type Fig which on occasion can ripen the Main Crop without Caprification. If the Main Crop aborts, it will confirm without a doubt that Herman is correct. Happy Growing, kiwibob, Seattle

Great observations, everyone! I have 2 baby DK, and their leaves are not alike with my boss' purported adriatic. the dk leaves are more sandy and rough, whereas the purported adriatic leaves are very soft and smoother by comparison, since my plants are young, I cannot make such assertion. Thus, I leave to the experts. I really don't care about what is called. I care it produces fruit and good ones. So far, great reports of good fruit, so I will keep them. Art, your pictures are awesome.

Grasa, Thanks again for my plant. I agree, I don't care what it is. It's a vigorous plant in my yard.

Grasa, does your boss get fruit in the nodes of current leaves or only on the bare parts of the tree? He'll probably know and that would give us the answer.

Art, I have a couple of DK brebas on year old tiny trees and have this 2 y.o. Adriatic loaded with brebas. With this trail, I got curious and put them nearby to compare. I found that DK leaves are much sandier and tougher. The DK brebas are bluish in tone color. Adriatic brebas and leaves are much smoother and more green (towards yellow). Your fruit look delicious. Mine are getting there.

Interesting....
I had only 2 breba and about 20 main crop figs are getting ripe. They are large and nice looking. No figs were aborted by the trees but I have the wasps around.

I have several DK plants much older than Grasa's Adriatic. The DKs also woke up earlier than Grasa's. They have some leaves that look similar but as Grasa's matures it's developed a leaf type that isn't present on any of my DKs. YMMV. Pictured is Grasa's adriatic, The leaves with the red dots, 1 - 3 lobes are very similar to my DK leaves. The leaf with the blue dot and 5 lobes (or thumbs) isn't present on any of my DKs. After about 4 weeks of growth it seems that all the new leaves are this 5 lobed kind. If anyone has 5 lobed leaves on their DK let us know.

Today I took a left on 9th Ave NW from NW Marked, coming home, and saw several large, mature fig trees (they are most likely Desert King. The figs are huge and bluish), Leaves are also very large and darker than the Adriatic I got from Adam. I saw his tree in early fall. the leaves are similar to mine baby tree, just bigger, they are 'yellowish and fine', not the Desert Kings I see around. Slavi, you ought to see this tree in a yard it has to be some 12" in diameter ... huge.

Slavtcho, What makes you say with 100% certainty that they're not Desert King? I have some of those same Adriatic from Grasa, so it would be great to know for sure one way or the other. Cheers, Jim
