great.. RdB is just now setting figs..

so.. i have been waiting for the RdB to put on the figs. it's good thing it's putting on the figs, but it's little late. i will let them ride out till the mid of oct. since we should still have some heat down here even into early nov. but i hope RdB will get on with program and start putting on the figs little earlier next yr.

Pete how old is your plant ?

martin, rooted last yr. so i think it's just late due to being too young. but there are others such as Col de Dame Blanche and Black Madeira that's setting figs on time.. so.. well.. RdB should follow suit. x)

Pete, those figs should make it. Even if your tree defoliates at the end of the season, keep it in a sunny location. The south-facing side of your home will extend the season as a microclimate. Use the reflected heat from the side of the building. And if you have some cement there, all the better. A slab will soak up the heat and carry the plants through really chilly nights.

I have a few that are doing the same. RdB is one of them. They were all small trees that were aquired last fall. I'm trying to look at it as a good sign they will come on strong next spring. Might have to break out the Q-tips and olive oil this fall.

Ah dont be so hard on the baby but if you have nice fall weather you may yet get a few to ripen .
Here i was just out knocking off some very small figs on plants.

gentlemans - did we reach the cut off point already for all small figs?
thought it was later on in august....

depends on how late your heat will last.. since the figs will take about 85 days to ripen.. if it sets the figs now that will be around mid oct. down here in NC, the heat will last till early nov. so there is good chance ones setting figs now will be ripen by then. up in NY or further up north.. not too sure.

Here it is, all small pea size are coming off this way tree's can rest a bit afterwards going into offseason.

I am with you Martin, I may leave the bastard child col de dama blanc to have one if it comes in the next week but that depends how I feel when I see it, Colisanti dark I prune off in August as it is a smaller fig and should ripen decently into october.
