Green and Red Figs revisited

In search of a Green fig with Red Center. With some stipulations:

  • Affordable (<$35)
  • FMV-free (or I should say "believed to be FMV-free"...please don't roll your eyes at me...I have my reasons, however misguided :P)
  • Easy to root or already potted (reliable nursery source welcomed)
  • Preferably tasty
My Unk. White Greeks cuttings -- purchased solely to fulfill the role as resident Green & Red fig -- have apparently formed a suicide pact, and I am now interviewing applicants to fill their position. Going to try Grasa's scion graft technique on the two remaining cuts in the fridge with some BT root stock this spring to see if I can salvage them, but given my level of experience, I think it's safe to say having a backup plan would not be altogether imprudent.

Looking at Battaglia, std. Verte/Green Ischia, Vasilika Sika, Stella, JH Adriatic (although I thought I read JH believed the cultivar had FMV although it had not expressed in recent years?), or others as you think would be wise choices. Bourj. Blanc & CdDB have proved to be way out of my budget.

If you have ideas, let me know. If I don't reply here, it's not because your thoughts are not appreciated, it's because I've already "contributed" (term used loosely) too much the past few days, and I'm sure you're tired of reading my comments. I'll be quiet now.......
Oops! PS> Happy New Year!

I bought a Green Ischia Strawberry from Wellsprings Gardens on Ebay - $4.99. I've never tasted one of these, but lots of people seem to like them so I ordered.

The plant arrived healthy, very small, but healthy. It is about 6in tall and diameter like a bamboo skewer.

If  you decide to go this route, don't worry about small size since figs grow so fast. Last winter I bought a Chicago Hardy on ebay that looked like a 4 in twig. I babied it and fertilized it heavily in the spring and by the end of growing season it was 5+ ft tall and bore half dozen figs!

it's not the price of plant, but the shipping that is expensive. cuttings are way to go. much cheaper and easy to get. finding FMV free plant will be much harder if not impossible.

CdDB is free from USDA/UCD. but it has FMV. i have JH Adriatic from a reliable source. it also has FMV, along with White Greek.

That is one of the reasons I bought the small size. The shipping was only $6. Total cost on the Green Ischia was $12.

I recently received some Texas BA-1 cuttings. I've seen them reasonably priced on eBay and I've read they are a really good green/red center fig. I will be able to tell you in a couple years. I haven't been on the forum very long but I don't recall seeing very much mentioned about them. Maybe someone else can chime in and fill in the blanks on this fig.
