Hi Guys! I have a nice branch that is about is about 14 inches long and green. Would I be able to put it in water to root? Or is it too late the season? Do I have to let dry or harden off first? Jerry
Is the branch still attached to the tree?If it is I would wait untill spring If not don't let it dry at all put it in water and give it a try
Yes still attached to the tree. it's this years growth
You might consider doing an air layer instead of taking it as a cutting.
I have had great success rooting green wood directly into the mix. Stick the wood as deep as you can with only one node exposed. But since it is still attached to the tree then I would follow Ken and Jims advice and wait till Spring to air layer. 100% success if done right, and this is simple too.Good luck,
Ok thanks guys! I will leave it till the spring.
I would air layer the green wood, now. Green wood/soft wood air layer will root much faster (3 weeks vs. 5-6 weeks) than air layering a hard wood. But, you don't have to shave/making wounds while air layering green/soft wood. Navid.
Good point, Navid, and one I wish I had heeded a short time ago. I tried girdling a too-small airlayer and the bark removal weakened the branch enough that it broke during the process, and the little branch died.
I am going to leave it. This morning I found some wire and made an " S" hook. It's still plyable to get it to grow up instead of side ways. That is why I was going to cut it off.
