KK, don't remove the figs, instead, remove all but last 2-3 leaves from each branch.

??

removing the leaves helps it to finish up and ripen faster.

I've heard people say that but I don't believe it.  I don't have any proof.

I agree with Bob.  On several levels cutting leaves seems like a bad idea.  First, directing energy into ripening figs this late in the season without leaves to replenish energy stores for dormancy may lead to delayed or no breaking dormancy next year.  Also, removing leaves can signal the tree to expend energy to put on new growth.  The leaves shade the tree so the trunk does not get sun scald on cool but sunny days. They also hide the fruit from predators.

It puts on lots of figs every year, never drops any but never ripens any. They stay hard as rocks. Probably needs a really long summer. I had it about 4 years. For me, if it doesn't ripen any this year, it's history. If I do get rid of it, anyone with a long summer is welcome to cuttings.
