Greenhouse fig find

I stumbled upon this old fig tree today. I took my kids to a local historic greenhouse built in the 1960's. Of course no one there could tell me anything about it. I emailed the director so hopefully they can help identify it or at least what color the figs are.

The bottom pic gives you an idea how big the room is. Snapped a pic from the brochure

More pics of trunk & knarled branches
Guess it's a small dark fig smaller than a quarter

& they had another fig tree.

Ate both pictures from same tree ? Confused a bit. If they are i would go with Celeste which is a southern fig. Just a guess

Could be. I'll be stopping by on Monday to talk to the director. She said it's been there before she was even hired. I'll be taking a few cuttings. Could be a Celeste but I'm in northern Indiana 5 min from Notre Dame University. Whenever it fruits I'll update the pics.

Yes it's from the same tree. I'll get some better pics.

May not be a Celeste then. Too far north. Looks like a old tree. Is it in a pot or in ground

In the ground. Could've been planted in the 60's. It's definitely a forgotten about fig tree. When I asked about the figs no one knew a thing about it. Figs are nonexistent around here.

It's located inside a conservatory I'm guessing whoever donated it it was his favorite fig.

Well you may have to get this one going. And go back to see what it is.

I'm meeting with the director tomorrow after work. She's letting me have a few cuttings. I'll keep in touch with them & grab some figs hopefully in July. I'll post more pics tomorrow.

Would you mind taking a picture of the planter it's in or the base of the fig tree? Just wondering how much space those roots have, I'm actually very glad that you will bring this tree some much needed new life.

Sure will. I'm going back tomorrow so I'll take more pictures. Its planted in the ground I'll grab one of the limbs to show how thick the trunk is. To me it looks like they just trim it back every Fall. Other than that it's been lost in time in that old conservatory. I don't think anyone ever goes inside to see what's really inside. I should've taken more pics but I had my 2 kids running all over the place.

Just added a few pics of the base so you can see just how large & old this fig tree is.

Those fruits do not look ripe.

Naw it's a stretch even for me. I've eaten an underripe fig once, never again lol

Its got a hollow center so rules out Celeste and puts it in the BT class

That fig trunk is totally huge, did you decide to take some cuttings, or are you going to wait and see if it's a good fig?

This is awesome,I love it when you find this kinda stuff.Did you manage to speak to the Director of the place?

I took about 5 cuttings off this tree I'll be going back later in July to see how the ripe figs look.

The director didn't know much about it except that the figs are small & dark. He also said that the squirrels love them.
Hopefully in July there will be plenty of figs.
I guess the room it's in was built in 1967 so that's when it was planted. Who knows how old it was when whoever planted it but it for sure has a thick trunk.

So you think it's some type of Brown Turkey? I sure hope it tastes good. I'll still keep it in my collection since it's an heirloom fig from my hometown.

Will do. If it's any good I'll send out cuttings in the fall when they trim it back.

If you can get permission to start an airlayer that would be the way to go..you would have a ready made tree . LOL

I was thinking the exact same thing. I figured it would be a training thing for the director. & I get a tree.
