Now, this is a very cool idea. I really like the idea. Talking about recycling, this is so coot! Building a greenhouse out of 2 liter plastic bottles! I am considering building one of these but I want mine to be 10x24. Now all is need is a whole lot of clear plastic bottles! Ha! http://www.reapscotland.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Plastic_Bottle_Greenhouse_Instructions_2004.pdf
Unbelievable, super cool idea, a lot of drinking.
I like it. How would you seal between the stacks of bottles? silicone? I imagine if sealed proper would be quite efficient with that thick double wall
Talking about saving the planet! This is an excellent idea! How to seal between the bottles? I would use clear silicone. The top part is what I am wondering. I have a handyman and this type of stuff is right up his alley! I'm gonna get him over at my place and get his input. I think putting a fascia plate with a wad of clear silicone at the top would work though.
I wonder how long the bottles would last in the sun? My guess a couple yrs. It would be very difficult to heat and cool properly unless well sealed. Looks neat but not very practical IMO.
Great idea! I wonder if it would hold up to a heavy snow?
It's an interesting and cost effective idea (other than the cost of all of that soda). I don't know but a couple people that drink soda, i don't know where i would get all of those bottles.Cool find Dennis, thanks for sharing.
Good idea for a short term use green house. I would be worried about the Sun uv rays effect on the bottles. Could requirer a lot of raking after a nor'easter.
Take this structure then wrap it in UV resistant plastic. With the problem of air seepage remedied with the plastic, the bottles should provide more insulative value.
Cool idea.Looks like a lot of work and a ton of drinking though.
I think the UV resistance of the soda bottles will be poor. The industry is pushing for UV degradable plastics for that type of plastic.I think sealing the bottles would be a bear. If the spaces between the bottles aren't sealed they would leak like a sieve. You could cover it with poly but what would be the point? The bottles could keep two poly layers apart (rather than a fan) but that could be a problem is a colder climate. In NJ when a heavy snow was expected we would turn off the fans. The two layer would stick together, next we would burn like crazy to keep the snow melting off the plastic. This keeps the frames from collapsing under the weigh of the snow. It was expensive but we didn't lose the house which was important. If you drive down Mooresville Road near Salisbury you can see a old glass house that was half destroyed by just the little snow we has last year. The metal was totally twisted and buckled for at least 75 feet.
I went on youtube and saw a close up of one built by Georgia Southern. This would not work in my climate. It would be great for North Florida or lower Alabama. Oh well, the thought was nice.
Very cool idea!
I agree UV would be a problem. UV film might solve it.Fill some of those bottles with water and you have a heat sink.
Man, that is the coolest idea! Ultimate recycling.
If you filled them with water I'm thinking in two weeks you would have a really greenhouse. Think algea
