Greenhouse pictures

here is my almost done greenhouse... Still a few things to fix but this is a good start.

this is another picture taken five days after the first one.

now some might ask why all these ropes? The answer is that I want to be able to not damage the pipes and tarp with any kind of screws (Except the bottom ends were secured with screws). I might have to take this greenhouse down at the end of fall.

My main hope is to have everything in the greenhouse grow substantially more rapidly then the previous years.

the total price of this project was 70$ I also want to thank the people at Canadian Tire for making a pricing mistake on the UV resistant PVC pipes (the price was 3.50$ instead of 6.50$). I wish they would have charged me too much as by law they would have had to give them to me for free.

Michal,

Great work. What kind of cover are you using?
From what I can see it looks like a white tarp. Are you going to use it in the winter? If so, what all do you plan on doing?

I HAVE to do something this fall. My collection keeps getting bigger and bigger.

I used a 20x20 transparent tarp I bought for 54$ with all the taxes. This tarp is UV resistant it is a bit more transparent then the regular white tarp but to me it feels like a white tarp...

Sure this is not the fancy green house cover but for 54$ this is a great deal. I am sure you can find the same thing in the U.S. and even the white tarp will do the job. After all, it will provide some shade against the intensive sun during the summer.

For winter I am planning to close down the greenhouse and store all the figs inside.

This is my first year so I am going to change a few things on my next project.

The end result of this simple greenhouse is that I am way ahead with the fig trees. The way things are looking now the first figs will rippen at the end of May or early June.

Good job Michal. It looks good inside. I hope you get many ripe figs this year.

Way to go Michal.
I have a feeling you will be building bigger and bigger in the future.  ; )

Good Job Michal I think soon enough I will have to do the same at our truck yard as I am definately running out of room and dont really want to stop.

Thanks everyone,

Also, Nelson do you have some kind of winter car shelter in your truck yard?
If yes this can be an easy solution as a greenhouse. John in Fredericton is doing that...

Looks good Michal. I'm planning to build something similar to start using by this winter.

I've been kicking around the idea of building sort of a hybrid hoophouse. Something with salvaged glass sides and a plastic hoop top. We'll see how that goes once I get into it.

Is the UV resistant PVC the same thing as gray electrical conduit? If so, it would be good news since conduit is cheaper for me than the standard white PVC. If I remember correctly, the 3/4" conduit was just over a dollar for 10' lengths at Lowes.

How much ceiling height did you end up with in yours?

Saxonfig: yes these are electric conduit pipes. If you are going to use the greenhouse during winter I would put a few more then what I did. As for the height it is over 7 feet.

Thanks.

Now I just have to find my personal balance between how big I'd like my greenhouse to be and how big my budget will allow :) .

I read somewhere that the electrical conduit is better for another reason. If you're going to use plastic, instead of a tarp as you did, PVC reportedly causes the plastic to break down faster for some reason. Haven't tested that out for myself but it's just one more reason for me to go with the less expensive conduit.

When I do get my gh project under way, I'll be sure to post pics to share with everyone here.
