Greetings From Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Greetings from the Rocky Mountains of Canada.
Thanks for letting me join eh!!

I purchased a fig tree at a garden centre here in Calgary.
It's a Brown Turkey fig tree.
It was the last one, and because it was the last one, I got a 25%
discount on the price.

My wife thinks I have lost my mind comepletly, trying to grow
figs in Calgary.
I tried to explain to her that it will be in the garage dormant
for the winter and not in the house.

The strange thing about this tree, is it had a branch growing
straight out about half way.
No angle to it it, but straight out.
So I cut it off and now I have four cutting on the window sill that
I hope will root and grow for me.
One already has a leaf on it, so fingers crossed eh?

I will take some pictures and post them on here.

See http://figs4fun.com/bills_figs.html  for ideas on potted figs, from a nice fellow in New Jersey.

See http://figs4fun.com/basics_Rooting.html for instructions on rooting.

Welcome Jerry to the Fun with Figs.
I am sure you will enjoy the fun of growing figs. Just watching the trees growing is fun enough and the ripe figs are a bonus in cold climate. I will suggest that you add "Desert King" to your collection for the first crop fruit(breba) which will have better chance of ripening.
Contact me in the fall and I may have a couple of cuttings for you to root.

Thank you for the links.

I hope to use the cuttings for trade with others.
I would like to get a "Black Jack" and/or a "Celeste".

Jerry

Thanks for the welcome OttawaZ.
I will take you up on that offer.

For now I can only have about two or three tree
because we live in a townhouse, so I am limited on space.
The spot I have my tree now is nice and warm and the bricks
hold in the heat all day.

What a GREAT welcome from all of you!!
Thank You!!

Now this isn't my first foray into figs.
I bought my dad one when I was about 17 years old.
He had for quite a while.
I didn't pay too much attention, I was too busy chasing skirts.
I don't really remember what happened to it when I moved
away to go to school?
I know he has another one now.
He received a cutting from a friend and it is a dark fruit tree.
Probaly a black jack or brown turkey.

Again Thank You for the warm welcome!!

Jerry
