Greetings From Long Island

Hi folks.  New to forum and fairly new to fig propagation.  Lot's of good info posted here for the newbie.  I've attached some photos of what happens when you get bored on a Saturday afternoon in February, decided to cut back your fig tree, watch a bunch of youtube videos on fig propagation, have no idea of what a reasonable rooting success rate is and don't have the heart to throw away any cutting that has even the slightest hint of root growth.

I don't know what the variety is but the parent tree was planted on the south side of a fence in my backyard on Long Island, NY about 25 years ago and has never been covered.  I have also included two photos of some of last years figs from the parent tree.  Any thoughts on what variety of fig it is would be appreciated.

HOLY COW!!!
That is a lot of propagating.

dont know but I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in.
Add a signature line so people know where you are and what zone you are in.

Welcome by the way.  I am still a newbie myself.

That's fantastic!!!! Nicely done. I could guess on the kind but I assure you I would probably be wrong.
You are going to have people lined up to buy those if you put them on ebay or craigslist.

Welcome and wow!

Jeff

That's great success ....and you are hooked for life

Welcome to the sanitarium,  Soni

Welcome to the forum. We are a bunch of figaholics here. So in short your among friends ;-)

lifigs:

Congratulations, on joining the forum.  We understand fig obsessions here.

Now we all know how lousy you are at rooting cuttings!  Kidding of course.

The original tree is probably a very good variety for your climate zone, and there are some members on this forum who also live on Long Island.  I'm sure they will be in touch with you.  Also, held every September, is a Fig Festival, in Staten Island, and if you still have some treelets left over, I'm sure you will find buyers there.

Good luck.  Post often.  Sit back, and enjoy the ride to Fig Land.  This forum is the best source and a clearing house for the latest information.  Forget the text-books, and garden guides.

ANGELO, PATTEE, ED..... get a load of those fig plants!

Hello lifigs ! Well you seem to have quite a green thumb ! Beautiful tree . Good to know it's good in our climate uncovered , but somewhat sheltered it seems. Maybe someone with more knowledge of trees can ID it for you.
Good to have you here !

Holy Smoke! That looks gorgeous. Are you trying to tell us you are just a natural at this? I am most impressed that even without enlarging the photo, the figs on the mother tree are apparent. They must be huge. Put something of standard size in the fruit photos for comparison. Most people use a quarter.

They look great.

You have  acquired yet another admirer from afar.

it is brown turkey

I saw you on ebay. Welcome

yep brown turkey,,, welcome to the insanity..... what size straight jacket do you prefer?

Thanks for the warm welcome.  So it looks like the consensus is they are Brown Turkey.

Right now they are all just a single stem.  I was planning on cutting them at about 24"-30" just above a leaf node to encourage lateral branches.  What is the best time of year to trim the tops?

The eye is too small to be BT.

Can we see more pics of the leaves please? Choose the ones that have the most lobes and are full sized.

I took a look at your pics data, hope you don't mind, and see that figs were ripening by 8/19, which is early.

p.s. are you looking to trade?

Also some might say that the figs with latex leaking from them were picked too early.  Welcome to the site and enjoy!

Welcome!  You did a great job propagating those figs.   You should decide if you think it's a brown turkey.  There are lots of photos here

Here's one.  There are a few leaf photos as well.

Hello forum members....

Questions:

Besides visual clues like leaf and interior/exterior of figs, is there a definitive "clue" that will tell you if a unknown fig is absolutely a "Brown Turkey", and not another variety?  Is it the eye, neck, what?

jenniferarino83,

That was not me on ebay.  I am really not sure I want to go through the hassle of trying to ship 1 gallon live plants.  I did put them up on craigslist and sold a couple to local people at 2 for $20 just to try and recoup the cost of the containers and perlite.

Bob, that is Brown Turkey MD, which is not really a Brown Turkey at all. http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Brown-Turkey-MD-pix-2604282
