Greetings from South Jersey

Hello all,
This is my first post, as I have been lurking around since Easter break, and it was time to say HI. I'm a science teacher at the county alternative high school and was looking for something 'easy' to grow/propagate with my students in our greenhouse. also, I am currently working on creating a small 90' x 70' orchard at my house and the two projects lead me to figs!
I actually got some cuttings last week from a friend when I put a shout out on Facebook and Grasa was so kind to send some to me also. This is a very helpful forum and I've been digging the great sense of community here. I hope to find several fruitful varieties to keep in-ground here in zone 7.

Thanks,
Ben

Welcome Ben. I bet the kids are going to love these cuttings. I love watching them come to life.

Oh Ben, what a great project. I wish you all the luck helping those youngsters "mind demanding alternative kids" minds occupied.  I am happy to help you launch your start up plan. (on a side note,   my son attended alternative school - it was the only way he could fit and be accepted, so I know what it takes to be a teacher at those programs, and appreciate your intent and disposition for this)- wish you all the luck you need.

Welcome Ben, You and the kids will be learning together, I wish you all great success!!  :o)

Good luck!  There are lots of members near you.  Look at the thread started by Herman2 - he lists what worked for him in-ground in NJ.

Welcome to the forum.

WELCOME BEN ! Awsome project ! Good luck !...........Tons of INFO on here just do some searchs .
AUSTIN in NEBRASKA.

welcome Ben

Thank You all for the warm welcome. Yes, quite excited to see how things go. Have a book on propagation ordered. We may end up planting some of our successes here on school grounds being that last summers wind storm wiped out most of the campus trees. I like seeing my students in situations or trying things they are not accustomed to, eating figs would probably be one(they went crazy for snow peas in last years veggie garden). You should see them when I take them into the woods for ecology hikes, tough city kids- Ha

Ben...welcome to the forum, and best of luck with your project with the kids...there's a lot of info stored  in the forum data bank, and it could be a valuable source of research material for your classes.

Ben, welcome from California!

Sue from SoCal pointed out this group to me a while back and maybe you'll be interested in some of the their activities might be something you could incorporate into your school projects (in your spare time, haha): https://www.facebook.com/plantfruittrees and http://commonvision.org/
